Wings Need Helm

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,

Ask Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock how he can fix what ails his bottom two forward units and he’ll utter a one-word answer.

“Helm,” is Babcock’s response.

Unfortunately, that situation doesn’t look like it’s about to change anytime soon. The Wings will go into St. Louis Thursday to face the Blues once again minus energy-providing centre Darren Helm, out for all but one game of the current NHL season due to a mysterious back ailment.

When all else fails maybe it’s time to give Dr. Sarno a call

Might be time to call up Ferraro or Sheahan to see if they can center the 3rd line and provide some jump.

Poor Babs. Listen, aside for all the fans that wants to get rid of him, at the end of the day he needs to work with what he has. Changing coach will not make our players on the 3rd and 4th line better. The same can be said of Q. I honestly think that he would sit him, but maybe Holland does not want to lose face for what he paid for (which is too much). Holland is the one that went out and got those players. I agree we need to shake this team but with what? Who wants our 3-4th liners? What will we get in return? This is a real mess, and even if you put another coach behind the bench, it won’t solve our problems. We might get a bit more energy and effort for a few games, but our “skill set” will eventually catch up to us.

I do not see a miracle solution…by the time Helm will be back, it will be to late…and I do love Helm, but to count solely on him to boost everyone else is also a bit unfair

If Darren Helm being out is causing most of the Wings’ issues, then this team is doomed and should tank for a good draft pick.

Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Helm is a great player, great forechecker…average PKer…sorry but I don’t think he’s demonstrated he’s GREAT on the PK…but to tell me this team can’t go without their 3rd line center?

Ha.

No coach in the world can make Kyle Quincey an NHL star. He just isn’t that able of a player.

Cool.

How’s the PK been since?

He’s just one guy, just pointing out he’s got the speed and positioning to force the play and be disruptive.  And how many shifts has Helm had on the PK this year?

Abby got his contract and he’s playing like it.  Miller looks like he’s in la-la land.  Our D are letting forwards between them and the goalie and aren’t clearing Jimmy’s office, except for Big E who’s started using his size.  Eaves arguably our best F PKer was out over a year.  Cleary’s running on 1 knee (and magically he’s 100% after stating a week before that “obviously” his knee’s not 100%.) and he’s getting PP time too, so he doesn’t have the energy to be aggressive and that’s the PK’s biggest problem, they’re waiting for the PP to dictate the play not forcing the play and causing turnovers, like every team’s been able to do against us.

Just my .02 though.  I think when Helm gets back we’re going to see a dramatic improvement on one of our PK units.

It would be less interesting to you if you read the article.

“Ask Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock how he can fix what ails his bottom two forward units and he’ll utter a one-word answer.”

Helm isn’t going to save the team, but it’s pretty clear how important he is to the bottom six.

And if what’s wrong with the Red Wings is the bottom six…

That is ONE of the issues is it not?

Yes, it’s one of the issues.  Your response was as if Babcock said that getting Helm was going to save the team.
