Weiss Ready To "Help Out" The Wings

Michael Traikos of the National Post spoke with Stephen Weiss at the Biosteel Camp,

One might think that Stephen Weiss signed with the Detroit Red Wings this summer because he finally wanted to be a star on a star team. After all, the 30-year-old has spent the last 10 seasons living in anonymity in Florida, where he was the No. 1 centre of a perennial non-playoff team. And now he is in Hockeytown U.S.A., where the spotlight seems as inevitable as the expectations.

But while Weiss used to be called Weizerman when playing junior hockey in Plymouth, Mich., the soft-spoken Toronto native has no illusions of becoming the next Steve Yzerman. If anything, he wants to remain under the radar.

“There really wasn’t a lot of thought going into [the deal with Detroit],” said Weiss, who was not offered a contract to stay in Florida. “To join an organization like this is pretty special for me. [Yzerman] was one of my favourite players, no doubt. He’s a guy I looked up to for sure. But I’m not dreaming about trying to go in there and doing something similar. Hopefully I can just help out.”
