Vlasic Fined For Slash On Heatley

NEW YORK (April 4, 2013) -- San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic has been fined $8,378.38, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slashing Minnesota Wild forward Dany Heatley in NHL Game No. 542 in San Jose on Wednesday, April 3, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the third period. Vlasic was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for slashing.

A review of the incident that included a conversation with the Minnesota Wild confirmed that Heatley suffered an injury in an ensuing scrum and not as a result of Vlasic’s slash.

As a first-time offender, the maximum Vlasic could be fined was the lesser of $10,000 or one-half of his daily salary.

Heatley certainly got hurt from the scrum, not the slash.  In fact I think he got hurt towards the end of it all judging by how he skated away.  When I watched it in real-time late last night I was fairly certain the only reason Dany STOPPED was because he then got hurt, or else he planned on dragging it out more.

I hate the Sharks as much as anyone but for crying out loud, the Wild came unhinged at the end and I don’t know what Dany thought he was going to prove.  Assuming Heatley is now hurt, I can’t imagine the Wild would be happy with the results of that stupidity at the end of a game they’d already well lost.

If this is the right first step to Vlasic finally earning his reputation as the dirty shitpickle he is, then I’m ok with it.

I got to watch Heatley quite a bit when he was in Ottawa, and the guy is a serial slasher.

Yes, he normally keeps it to hacking the shins of those players who displease him. He typically gets away with it too. But he does it a lot and the fact is that when something frustrates him, his first impulse is to swing his stick at it.

That’s exactly what happened here - Heatley took a pretty good swipe at Vlasic and Vlasic gave him one right back (but he connected).

Two wrongs don’t make a right, of course, and the NHL certainly shouldn’t let Vlasic off the hook on that basis. That said, it may be the reason why this is a fine and not a suspension.
