Video- Talking Hockey Night In Canada

Living in the Detroit area for most of my life, I always took for granted that Hockey Night in Canada would always be around.

Heck, I grew up with HNIC, from Ward Cornell and Foster Hewitt to Ron MacLean and Jim Hughson, I have witnessed it all.

Now, with the broadcast deal between Rogers and the NHL, who knows what lies ahead for HNIC as we know it.

CBC President Hubert Lacroix in this 9 minute interview explains CBC's position.

One thing to remember, Rogers now controls all of the content (incuding on-air personnel) basically meaning HNIC will still be on CBC but not produced or directed by CBC.

I think today will go down as one of the biggest days in NHL history. The league now has the revenue from TV to move to the next step on the sports hierarchy. This will be both good and bad for the sport. At 5.2 billion along with the 2 billion from NBC gives the NHL the same TV money that the NBA gets from ABC\ESPN. It is also great for Canadian teams as they get 35% of the Canadian contract for the 7 teams versus about 22% for other league revenues. It remains to be seen how all of this plays out, but we can hope this will allow the league to continue to grow the game around NA and the world. Hopefully it will also allow more teams to break even or make a profit and provide more stability to the existing franchises.

It makes sense for CBC and for the hockey fan he is not stuck watching the game CBC chooses for Saturday night since he can watch another game on CityTV or a Rogers cable channel. When fans see the hockey options they will get they will like this deal.
