Video- Joakim Nordstrom Hit On Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Will these types of hits ever stop?

via Sportsnet,

Check out this dirtiness, as Blackhawks forward Joakim Nordstrom hits Coyotes’ best defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson from behind.

via Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic,

After the game, Tippett said Ekman-Larsson was day-to-day with a "not-too-serious" upper-body injury and he is hopeful Ekman-Larsson is ready to play Saturday.

Pointless hit in a game where the Hawks have a goal advantage with 30 secs to go.

The league feels the need to continue to cluck its’ tongue and shake its’ head at such hits - They have to, because of the increasing liability of being sued for overtly enabling all manner of reckless play…

But, secretly - deep down inside the dirty-underwear corners of their consciousness - they harbor the Don Cherry Rock’Em Sock’Em gene.

They WANT splashy, brutal, spectacular MMA/UFC gladiatorial brutality. It attracts press - It is the stuff of spectacle, and “oooohs” and “aaaahs”, and rubbernecking 50-car pile-ups in the opposite direction while on the thruway.

Shameful as it seems - and as poorly as it reflects upon the sport and our society - It’s all about the trainwrecks. Calamity sells. Big.

Especially when packaged in 30-second bite-sized snippets geared toward a glassy-eyed non-traditional viewer who might be seduced by such carnage without ever having to understand that gapping-up has nothing to do with polo shirts, cargo shorts and top-siders

So, let’s not kid ourselves about the token efforts of the Department of Player Safety - They’re just there to put tiny, self-righteous (sphincter-protecting) band-aids on the nightly gore (much of it yet unseen, until validated by the autopsies in the decades to come.)

Everyone talks a big game about “respect” and protecting the player, but hasn’t the stones to do anything substantive about it ,so as not to constipate the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Disgusting. I cringe every time I see one and I fear the day where a player is killed or crippled as a result. I really don’t want that black mark on my favorite game. Honestly, the NHL has been lucky this hasn’t happened already.

They need to go back to allowing players to wrap opponents in these situations. All these hits should be ejections and most suspensions.

Very true. You can lump them and Pittsburgh together in the same garbage bag. angry
