from Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic,
With the silly season underway in the NHL, I’d like to make a modest proposal intended to make all trade boards and trade trackers more pertinent in the future.
Instead of listing only the players themselves as possible targets, we need to start including an “available salary-cap space” line on these transactions.
For example, ahead of Saturday’s trade that saw the Devils acquire P.K. Subban from the Nashville Predators, you could have listed $9-million worth of New Jersey’s cap space as a commodity that a dozen teams prized – and frantically chased. It put Devils’ general manager Ray Shero in an enviable position – of playing one desperate team off against another, knowing that someone was going to step up and make him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Cap space really is that precious and coveted.
