This Is Not The Start The Oilers Planned

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

With 15 losses in 19 games to start a season that was supposed to be one in which things finally started getting better, it’s really hard to fathom it can get any worse than this for the Edmonton Oilers.

Losing 5-4 on Sunday night to the reigning Stanley Cup champions, a Blackhawks team that’s really starting to hit its stride and score goals in bunches, wasn’t, in itself, any reason for despair....

The entire organization seems to have that shellshocked look. Well, not GM Craig MacTavish, maybe. Having battled serious health issues and gone through the living death of coaching in the NHL, he knows there’s worse than this, and he knows this time, at least, he’s in charge of his own fate.

Rookie head coach Dallas Eakins is hanging in there pretty well, worried as much about the impact this difficult start is having on his family in their new hometown, wondering every day how to get his message across to his players while maintaining a positive public posture with the media....

Eakins has got veterans making rookie mistakes, young forwards with talent but little defensive savvy, a blue line that isn’t very good and saw one of its more experienced components traded away last week and goaltending that lets the team down pretty much every night.

The management team of Lowe & MacTavish need to be fired. They had a whole summer to make changes and all they did was add a defenseman, a defensive forward and a rookie coach, when they should have upgraded the whole defense and goaltending. You could compare it to Florida except Dale Tallon had a cash strapped team about to be sold. He was handcuffed, what is MacTavish ‘s excuse? He didn’t want to give up his good young talent. Well you have to give something to get something in return. The Oilers could have dominated as they promised they would if MacTavish didn’t sit on his assets. Lowe and MacTavish have proven to be incompetent, it is owners responsibility to replace these two now. The Oilers owner kept Lowe and gave MacTavish a promotion and now his team is worse than ever. Someone from outside the organization with fresh eyes needs to take over or Oilers fans can expect more of the same result next year. Neil Smith who brought the Rangers a Cup would be an upgrade. That said anyone would be an upgrade over Lowe & MacTavish.

Don’t forget that, in order to shed salary to accomodate bringing in a goalie who was bought out because of his mediocre play, they traded away one of the only decent defensemen they have, thus making the defense worse as they hope the goaltending will get better.
