The Vegas Golden Knights Are In The Playoffs Again

03/30/2019 at 10:50am EDT

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,

The Vegas Golden Knights have made it two appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in their two seasons in the NHL.

The Golden Knights (42-30-6) clinched a 2019 playoff berth when the Arizona Coyotes lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on Friday. Vegas is third in the Pacific Division with 90 points and four regular-season games to play, five points behind the second-place San Jose Sharks.

Here are five reasons the Golden Knights clinched a playoff berth:

1. Stone on the scene

The Golden Knights acquired arguably the best player moved before the NHL Trade Deadline, getting forward Mark Stone from the Ottawa Senators with forward Tobias Lindberg for forward Oscar Lindberg, defenseman Erik Brannstrom and a second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft on Feb. 23.

Since the trade, Vegas is 10-4-1 and Stone has 10 points (four goals, six assists) and has joined center Paul Stastny (16 points; six goals, 10 assists) and forward Max Pacioretty (eight points; four goals, four assists) to create a dominant second line.

LOOKING AHEAD: 2019 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

Team Notes
* The Golden Knights embark on another playoff run as they look to improve upon their unforgettable postseason journey in 2018 that saw them sweep their way through the first playoff series in franchise history, claim three series-clinching victories on the road and become the 20th team from either the NHL, MLB, NBA or NFL/AFL to reach the championship series/game in their first trip to the postseason.
^All-time for NHL and NBA; since 1966 for NFL/AFL; since 1969 for MLB

* Vegas is the seventh team in NHL history to make the playoffs in each of its first two seasons, joining the Oilers as the only team to do it in the post-expansion era (i.e. excluding teams who joined the NHL in 1967-68 or earlier). The Oilers went on to extend their streak to 13 consecutive seasons, a run which saw them capture five Stanley Cups within their first 11 campaigns.

* Though playing under different rules and circumstances, these are the other franchises to make the playoffs in each of their first two NHL seasons, with their consecutive playoff appearances and inaugural season noted in parentheses: the Oilers (13; 1979-80), Rangers (9; 1926-27), Blues (6; 1967-68), Canadiens (2; 1917-18), Flyers (2; 1967-68) and Kings (2; 1967-68).

* The Golden Knights are a perfect 3-0 with a chance to clinch a series, outscoring opponents 6-1 and claiming each of those wins on the road. Vegas is one of six NHL franchises to earn each of its first three series-clinching victories as visitors, following Calgary/Atlanta (6), Pittsburgh (4), NY Islanders (3), San Jose (3) and Minnesota (3).

* The Golden Knights, who already have more series wins than two active franchises, can become the first NHL team to sweep the opening round series in each of its first two playoff appearances.

* The Golden Knights are aiming to become the first team since 2009 to win the Stanley Cup the season following a loss in the Final. The Penguins, who dropped a six-game game decision to the Red Wings in the 2008 Stanley Cup Final, defeated Detroit in a rematch in 2009.

* The Golden Knights will look to become the second franchise in League history to reach the Stanley Cup Final in each of its first two playoff appearances (regardless of timing). The Blues achieved the feat under much different circumstances, reaching the Final in each of its first three campaigns by emerging from the West Division – which featured only teams that joined the NHL in the 1967-68 expansion.

Player Notes
* With his 75th career playoff victory in Game 1 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, Marc-Andre Fleury broke a tie with Chris Osgood for eighth place on the NHL’s all-time list. Fleury, who leads all active goaltenders in postseason games played (135), wins (75) and shutouts (14), now sits two victories from tying Mike Vernon (77) for seventh overall. Another run to the Final could move him into fourth all-time.

* Fleury has 14 career postseason shutouts, one shy of tying Clint Benedict and Osgood for fourth place on the NHL’s all-time playoff list. Fleury posted two of his four career series-clinching shutouts last year.

* Fleury is the only Stanley Cup winner on the Golden Knights roster and one of 12 active NHL players -and only active goaltender – with his name on the Cup at least three times (11 active skaters). Fleury aims to become the 13th netminder in League history to hoist the Cup four or more times.

* Fleury has appeared in the Final in each of the past three years – one of two players to do so since the 1986 playoffs (also Marian Hossa) – and five times overall. Only seven goaltenders in League history have reached the Final in at least four straight years: Jacques Plante (8), Billy Smith(5), RolandMelanson (4), Ken Dryden (4), Michel Larocque (4), Gump Worsley (4) and Gerry McNeil (4).

* The Golden Knights lineup still features each of its top three scorers from the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Reilly Smith (5-17—22 in 20 GP), Jonathan Marchessault (8-13—21 in 20 GP) and WilliamKarlsson (7-8—15 in 20 GP).

IN REVIEW: 2018-19 REGULAR SEASON

Team Notes
* Vegas holds the fifth-best record in the League since the Trade Deadline. Their marquee acquisition that day was five-time 20-goal scorer Mark Stone, who has 4-5—9 in 14 games with the Golden Knights – part of his best NHL season yet in terms of goals and points (32-39—71 in 74 GP w/ OTT and VGK).

* The reigning Pacific Division champion Golden Knights have held at least third place in their division for more than three quarters of their time in the League (78%, 288 of 366 days as of March 29).

* Since the introduction of divisions in 1926-27, only two NHL franchises have finished among the top three in their division in each of their first two seasons: the Rangers (American Division: 1st in 1926-27, 2nd in 1927-28) and Blues (West Division: 3rd in 1967-68, 1st in 1968-69).

* Vegas became the first team in NHL history to record a home point streak of at least 11 games in each of their first two NHL campaigns

* The Golden Knights are one of five NHL teams with at least six players who have scored at least 20 goals this season. Overall, the Vegas roster features six 20-goal scorers: Stone (32 w/ OTT and VGK), Jonathan Marchessault (24), William Karlsson (23), Max Pacioretty (22), Cody Eakin(20) and Alex Tuch (20).

Player Notes
* Marc-Andre Fleury has climbed from 11th to 8th place on the NHL’s all-time regular-season wins list this season, surpassing Glenn Hall, Tony Esposito and Jacques Plante.

* On Feb. 26, Fleury became the first goaltender to record 30 wins in 2018-19. In doing so, he joined Martin Brodeur (14), Patrick Roy (13), Henrik Lundqvist (11) and Ed Belfour (9) as the only netminders to record nine or more 30-win campaigns.

* With one more appearance, Fleury (59 GP) will reach 60 games in a season for the eighth time in 15 NHL seasons – he won the Cup in one of the previous seven such campaigns (2008-09: 62 GP). Over the course of those 59 games, Fleury has posted a League-high eight shutouts (tied), the second-highest total of his career (10 in 2014-15).

* Alex Tuch notched a point in nine consecutive games from Dec. 27, 2018 to Jan. 12, 2019, marking the longest point streak recorded by a Golden Knights player (3-8—11 in 9 GP).

* William Karlsson (66-65—131 in 160 GP), Jonathan Marchessault (51-80—131 in 155 GP) and Reilly Smith (41-71—112 in 138 GP) each have accumulated at least 100 regular-season points in a Golden Knights uniform, with Karlsson the first to do so on Dec. 6, 2018
