The UFA US College Prospects

from Tim Wharnsby of CBC,

The United States college hockey scene will raise the curtain on its post-season this weekend.

That means there will be a flurry of activity as NHL teams maneouvre to beef up the depth of their organizations with an unrestricted free-agent college player or two over the next few weeks.

This year's class is not considered as deep as the past few years. There simply isn't that true-blue chipper like Justin Schultz, who became a free agent thanks to a loophole in the old collective agreement four years after the Anaheim Ducks drafted him.

But there are two players common on most scouting lists in Western Michigan defenceman Dan DeKeyser and Nebraska-Omaha blue-liner Andrej Sustr.

Dan DeKeyser please.  Let’s pair him up in GR with Sproul.

DeKeyser’s probably going to want the same thing Schultz did – a guaranteed spot on the team’s NHL roster. Given the state of the Wings defense corp, maybe Tick Tock and Babs are ready to take a chance like that, but I doubt it. And that’s a shame, especially if this kid is anywhere near as capable as Schultz is.

I dunno.  The kid could have come out last year, but decided to play another year, and I think he also liked school.

Wings D depth won’t be that stunning.  Huskins, White, Colo won’t be back.  That leaves 6.  Maybe they keep one of those for depth.  He could compete against Q, Kindl, Lashoff.  He’s no slouch, but I dont’ think he has the offensive polish of a Schultz.  I think he could play a year in GR and be ready to take one of the top 6 jobs, if he progresses.  And he knows Blashill

Colo’s got another year on his deal.  I’d love to think that they’ll buy out his contract (and Samuelsson’s) but I just don’t have faith…

What was Tick Tock thinking?

He probably wasn’t 100% confident E52 would finally put it together, Kindl would emerge as a reliable option from time to time, and Lashoff would come out of nowhere.

He was panicking because, as much as some people think he was some kind of genius for not being able to land Suter, he put all his eggs in one basket and wound up empty handed.  Colo, being apparently pretty bright, smelled the desperation when Holland offered him a one-year deal and held out for a two-year deal that no GM thinking rationally would ever offer a guy as injury prone as Colo is.

That explains signing a guy, it doesn’t explain giving an injury-prone mid-pack defenseman a mult-year deal.

Two years isn’t exactly a lifetime contract. Although when it’s a contract given to a perpetually-injured defenseman then, yes, it definitely feels like a lifetime.
