The Owners Are Not Dealing With Fehr Properly

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

At best, an unidentified NHL official exercised poor judgment in accusing NHL Players Association executive director Donald Fehr of not fully informing his constituents of the NHL's offer.

At worst, owners are embracing a misguided, counter-productive strategy

Anyone who believes owners can bring about peace with players by trying to discredit their leader has not been watching how Fehr has managed this organization.

The owners would be kicking themselves if they made a deal without first trying this tactic. It’s clear that beating the maximum-possible concessions out of the players is what the league wants and to not even try to do so by sowing distrust in their union head (where there’s essentially no risk to them for doing it) would severely risk Bettman’s job as commissioner.

What are they going to lose? Another month of the season? The whole season? I don’t think they’re very worried about that.

I agree, also if you notice Fehr responded that things aren’t as far apart on economic issues as the league was stating. This tells me he did minimize the extent the league had accomodated the players demands for the “make whole” issue. I think the league was just keeping him “honest”, nothing more than that.
