from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,
One harmless-looking play.
One harmful mistake.
“I own it,” said Robin Lehner of his turnover after playing a rim-around that became Justin Williams’ tie-breaking and ultimate game-winning goal at 10:15 of the third period of Wednesday’s empty-netter-inflated 5-2 Game 3. “It comes down to one play and I screwed up.”
Well, it never quite comes down to one play. But when there is so little margin for error through this series in which the Islanders have scored one — count it, one — five-on-five goal in 127:46 of full-strength play, slip-ups become extremely difficult to overcome.
So just like that, the Islanders have ownership of a 3-0 series deficit to the Hurricanes in this second round through which Carolina has hit the high notes in the biggest moments and has consistently been the more opportunistic squad. Just like that, the Islanders are 60 minutes away from extinction.
