The Latest On Jarome Iginla

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

Don Meehan, the powerful agent who counts Jarome Iginla among his vast clientele, has started setting up meetings with teams other than the Boston Bruins to discuss the veteran winger’s future.

Without getting into specifics, Meehan confirmed to Sportsnet early Thursday that Iginla’s focus is expanding now that the hockey world has gathered in Philadelphia for the entry draft — a turn of events that says more about the current state of the Bruins’ cap situation than the player himself.

This does not appear to be a case where an agent is trying to capitalize on the free agent interview period and create leverage. Meehan is simply protecting his client.

Iggy is a real good fit in Boston. I would like to see him sign there again this year, though I suspect the bruins cup window is actually closing. I wonder if Meehan has approached LA about a fit. Sutter got the most out of Iggy and it would be phenomenal to see them win a cup together (like Regehr did this year. They even beat the combo of Richards and St. Louis to do it! Almost likerevebge a decade in the making ).

LA would have to make some moves to fit him in, I think.  They have about $5M in room under the cap and need to fill three spots.

Can’t see much benefit to slotting a roster spot for an older guy like Iggy in LA. Don’t imagine his “wins above replacement” would be that significant, and it would ultimately slow the development of someone else.

Thanks for the insight, shazam. Since I don’t watch the kings much outside the playoffs I don’t know the team that well. I suspect if Sutter thought he had a fit for Iggy he would have talked to Lombardi and made a call to Meehan already.

Will be interesting to see where he lands. I feel this past playoff run might have been his last shot at the cup. He was the Bruin with the most heart in game 7 but it wasn’t enough, unfortunately. At 37 will he have enough for another shot?
