from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,
First OEL agreed to terms in June. Then Doughty. Then McDonagh. Then Ellis. And now Schmidt. Outside of Karlsson, all potential 2019 UFAs have been taken off the market.
Don’t you guys know we have a freaking show to run on TSN July 1, boys?...
All eyes will continue to be fixed on Karlsson as he decides on his future while getting adjusted to his new life in San Jose. As I reported earlier this month, the CBA dictates that if he wants a maximum term, eight-year deal he can’t sign one with the Sharks until after the Feb. 25 trade deadline. He can sign an extension of any other length with San Jose before then but I can’t see him wanting less than eight years if he does decide to stay put....
After Karlsson, it’s 28-year-olds Jake Gardiner and Tyler Myers on the pending UFA D-man list. They would be highly sought after not only because they’re still in their prime but also because of the way they play the game in the new NHL. It’s all about puck-moving D.
