Teams Will Be Compensated For Losing Personnel To Another Team

via Elliotte Friedman tweets,

Today, NHL also approved compensation for a team losing someone hired to be head coach, GM or President/Hockey Ops with another club.

Generally, we're talking a third-round draft pick, and the club doing the hiring will have a window of three years to give it up.

It seems as if there would be a big potential loophole if the team that would owe compensation brought in the new executive as an assistant coach, assistant GM, or VP for a season. :/

Yeah, but is someone going to leave one organization to be the assistant coach in another?  And how many teams are going yo spend a year having someone be the assistant coach when the really want him to be a coach just to save a third round pick?

Also if, for instance, someone wanted to talk to Jeff Blashill and they were going to hire him as an assistant coach to get out of giving up the pick, I would think Detroit could simply refuse to let him out of his contract…

I also don’t think any coach would want to ruin his reputation by screwing over his former employee.

What bothers me about this, to be honest, is Detroit could’ve been racking up late round picks for all the coaches and GMs they have scattered around the league. This rule comes too late for Detroit. The next surge of coaching talent our of Detroit is years away…. the cupboard done been picked clean.

I dont know why they took it out in the first place.  There used to be compensation for signing away another coach/gm from another team.  I remember when crawford was canned in vancouver, he was still technically on their payroll, so LA had to ask permission to talk to him.  The canucks got a 3rd or 2nd rd pick for letting him sign with LA.
