There is no question that the Sabres are trying to deal for the 23-year-old Kane, who had a falling out with the Jets last week and whose season is over after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Vancouver, where Kane is from, is believed to be among the other clubs that have shown interest in the star winger.

The Jets are believed to be seeking a package that, among other assets, must include a first-round pick -- and certainly the Sabres have plenty of those.

While Buffalo likely would not include its own first-round pick, which could be the top overall pick in June, the Sabres also own the Blues' first-rounder from the Ryan Miller trade last year as well as the Islanders' first-rounder from the Thomas Vanek trade last season.

One of those two picks would likely be included in the package if Buffalo and Winnipeg ever complete a deal.
