Remember The New Jersey Devils Getting Hit With Cap Circumvention Penalties?

via Darren Dreger tweets,

Hearing the NHL has reversed part of its penalty against the Devils for cap circumvention (Kovalchuk contract)....

NHL will award Devils with the 30th pick in the Draft instead of the 1st round pick as usually determined. Also forgiving $1.5 mil of fine.

Needless to say, NHL teams are not happy with the leagues decision to let the Devils off the hook.

added 12:31pm, Again via Dreger tweet,

Devils were orginally fined $3 mil, had to forfeit a 3rd round pick in 2011 as well as a 1st in one of next 4 drafts.

I thought the penalty was harsh originally, but this seems obnoxious to go and partially reverse some of this.

Like that wasnt part of the deal to help sell the team and all of its debt to Josh Harris and Co.

Well, at least the NHL proves it is consistently inconsistent with their rules!

Will Shanahan Post a video showing why they made their decision?

“And here you can see the back room deal being made. And if we slow it down you can see the wink that comes right before the handshake.”

NJ’s decision was very odd when they choose not to use that penalty pick in the first round after they had gone to the cup finals.  Makes you wonder if they knew all along that this decision would be reversed and the league was just waiting a few years for the dust to settle.

Either way, i agree that the penalty was too harsh to begin with… especially with all the other teams and their ‘circumvention’.  I mean if the flyers are not getting penalized, no one should.

Still trying to wrap my head around the whole idea of “Lou Lamoriello being talked into going along with something”...
