No Surprise, Flyers Will Buyout Bryzgalov

via the Flyers website,

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren issued the following statement with regards to goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

“I met with Ilya this morning and informed him that we are going to exercise a compliance buy out of his contract. This was a very difficult business decision to make for us and we want to thank Ilya for his time here and wish him all the best moving forward.”

More to follow, including video, shortly...

I know we saw this coming but still, wow…..

I guess those reports stating they would stick with Bryz in the event they didn’t land Bernier weren’t exactly accurate.

Exactly, just like he told Carter he wasn’t going to be traded. Anytime Holmgren says something like that, everyone should realize it’s something different that’s going to happen.

I wonder if he still thinks he’s the best Russian in the NHL?

I love how Flyers can ruin any goalie.

have to wonder if the “we are not buying him out” talk was all an attempt to convince other GM’s that bryz was worth value for a possible trade so that they would not have to buy him out.

They had an interesting poll on the front page of TSN.com.

Who do you think the Flyers will target as their #1 goalie for next season?

- Roberto Luongo
- Mike Smith
- Ryan Miller
- Ray Emery
- Steve Mason will be the starter

I voted Steve Mason, but I’m sure Holmgren’s gonna pull yet another doozy outta his sleeves.

OH good lord, just think about the situation there would be if they acquired Luongo!

- Big cash on the books from the buyout
- Big cash on the books from Luo’s contract,
- possiblility of big cap-savings penalty if either of them retires early

... and they would be giving UP assets!  Philly would be screwed for years to come.

DO IT Holmgren

No retirement penalty for bought out contacts.

yeah Musky, amnesty buyouts don’t count against the cap since it was a drastic reduction, to keep from penalizing the owners by forcing them to pay bought out salary they would’ve kept if the cap had stayed static.

But on the bright-side, this can only lend in a train wreck for Holmgren, I love it.
