Twenty-eight of the NHL’s 30 teams took to the ice on the first Saturday of 2015-16, including the season-opening games for the Capitals, Ducks and Panthers.

* Ten games were tied or within one goal during the third period (TBL-BUF, OTT-TOR, NJD-WSH, DET-CAR, EDM-NSH, STL-MIN, DAL-COL, CGY-VAN, PIT-ARI and ANA-SJS).

* Ten teams scored three or more consecutive goals during their games (CHI, COL, DET, FLA, NYR, MTL, OTT, TBL, TOR and WSH).

* Two teams overcame third-period deficits to pick up victories (CGY, DET).

* Two players recorded four points – both career highs: Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog (2-2—4) and Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck (1-3—4). Six other players collected three points.

* Nine players scored two goals: Charlie Coyle (MIN), Cody Eakin (DAL), Lars Eller(MTL), Jaromir Jagr (FLA), Gabriel Landeskog (COL), Oscar Lindberg (NYR), Patrick Marleau (SJS), Teemu Pulkkinen (DET) and Reilly Smith (FLA).

* Three players registered three assists: Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk, Senators captain Erik Karlsson and Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck. Twenty other players notched two assists.

EXPERIENCE, YOUTH PROPEL PANTHERS IN SEASON OPENER
Powered by 43-year-old Jaromir Jagr (2-0—2) and 22-year-old Vincent Trocheck (1-3—4), the Panthers scored seven times – including four goals in the opening 6:46 of the game – to defeat the Flyers in their season opener.

* Via Elias, the Panthers set a modern-day NHL record (since 1943-44) for the fastest four goals to start a season. The previous record was held by the 1980-81 Flyers, who scored four times in the first 11:57 of their season opener vs. PIT (7-4 W).

* Jagr, who registered his 123rd career multi-goal game, now has 13-26—39 in 22 career season-opening games. His 39 points in such contests are by far the most in NHL history, nine more than second-place Ray Bourque (9-21—30 in 21 GP).

* Jagr also now has 47-71—118 in 94 career games against the Flyers, his second-highest goal and point totals versus any opponent (61-92—153 in 107 GP vs. NYI).

* Trocheck triggered the Panthers’ outburst with his goal just 1:23 after the opening face-off. Elias notes that it was the fastest season-opening goal in Panthers history, besting the previous mark of 3:28 set by Pavel Bure in 1999-00 vs. WSH.

* Reilly Smith, who was acquired from the Bruins during the offseason, scored twice in his team debut. Jussi Jokinen (1-1—2), Brandon Pirri (0-2—2) and Aleksander Barkov (0-2—2) also registered multiple points.

OVECHKIN DAZZLES (AGAIN), POWERS CAPITALS PAST DEVILS
Tied at 2-2 in the third period, Alex Ovechkin scored a highlight-reel goal to put the Capitals ahead and then collected the primary assist on Marcus Johansson’s decisive tally to power the team to a win in its season opener.

* Ovechkin now has 6-6—12 in 11 career season-opening games. The reigning Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner needs three points to reach 900 in his NHL career (476-421—897 in 761 GP).

* The Capitals improved to 12-5-1 in 18 all-time season-openers at home, including a 7-1-1 record in such games at Verizon Center.

RANGERS, BLACKHAWKS COMPLETE HOME-AND-HOME SWEEPS . . .
The Rangers and Blackhawks both completed sweeps of their back-to-back, home-and-home series against the Blue Jackets and Islanders, respectively:

* The Rangers opened a 5-0 lead on the Blue Jackets – highlighted by three goals in the first 5:48, including two off the stick of rookie Oscar Lindberg (2-0—2) – en route to their third straight victory.

* Lindberg has scored in each of the club’s first three contests (4-0—4). Per Elias, he became the sixth rookie in NHL history to register a goal in each of his team’s first three games of the season. The others: Boston’s Kenny Smith (1944-45), St. Louis’ Larry Keenan (1967-68), NY Islanders’ Billy Harris (1972-73), Washington’s Richard Zednik(1997-98) and Dallas’ Alex Chiasson (2013-14).

* Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves – including a sprawling paddle stop late in the middle frame – to lead the Rangers to their fifth consecutive victory over the Blue Jackets dating to Jan. 16 (CBJ: 0-3-2).

* Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin both posted 1-2—3 to power the Blackhawks to their fifth straight win over the Islanders at United Center dating to Jan. 9, 2011 (NYI: 0-4-1).

* Kane has recorded at least one point in each of the team’s first three games of the season, including consecutive multi-point efforts (2-0—2 on Friday at NYI). He has 7-8—15 in 10 career games vs. NYI.

* Panarin, who notched 26-36—62 last season in the KHL (54 GP), has 2-2—4 in his first three NHL appearances. The 23-year-old Korkino, Russia, native won a silver medal with his country at the 2015 World Championship (5-5—10 in 10 GP).

. . . FLAMES EDGE CANUCKS TO AVOID SAME FATE
Johnny Gaudreau posted 1-2—3, including the winning goal at 3:03 of overtime, to lead the Flames to a split of their home-and-home series with the Canucks.

* Gaudreau, who matched a career high for points in one game, has 3-5—8 in seven career regular-season games against the Canucks. He also registered 2-4—6 in Calgary’s six-game victory over Vancouver in the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including 1-2—3 in the decisive sixth contest.

* The Flames picked up their second straight regular-season win at Rogers Arena after dropping their prior eight visits dating to March 31, 2012.

CANADIENS OUTLAST BRUINS IN WINTER CLASSIC PREVIEW
The Canadiens jumped to an early 3-0 lead – led by a pair of goals from Lars Eller – and held off the Bruins in a preview of the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

* Eller, who notched a career-high seven game-winning goals last season, scored his first such marker of 2015-16, 77 seconds after the Bruins unsuccessfully challenged a potential goal. He also registered his fifth career multi-goal performance and first since Oct. 1, 2013 vs. TOR (2-1—3).

* Alex Galchenyuk (0-3—3) equaled a career high for assists/points in one game.Alexander Semin (0-2—2) also collected multiple helpers for his first points in a Canadiens uniform.

* Carey Price made 19 saves to improve to 22-8-3 in 34 career regular-season gamesagainst the Bruins (2.37 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO).

* The Canadiens improved to 11-1-0 in their last 12 regular-season meetings with the Bruins dating to March 3, 2013, including seven straight wins at TD Garden (BOS: 1-9-2). These clubs will meet four more times season, including two matchups – on Nov. 7 and Dec. 9, both at MTL – prior to their contest at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on New Year’s Day.

* ICYMI: The Bruins and Canadiens wore special toques during pregame warm-ups in celebration of the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.


JONES, RINNE BACKSTOP CLUBS TO SHUTOUT WINS
Martin Jones (27 SV) and Pekka Rinne (31 SV) both stopped every shot they faced to lead the Sharks and Predators, respectively, to shutout wins on Saturday:

* Jones improved to 18-11-2 in 36 career NHL appearances (1.90 GAA, .926 SV%, 8 SO). Via Elias, he became the fastest goaltender to record eight career shutouts sinceFrank Brimsek, who earned his eighth in his 27th game with the Bruins in 1938-39.

* Patrick Marleau (2-0—2) scored his 88th career game-winning goal, third among active players behind Jaromir Jagr (129) and Jarome Iginla (94). Newcomer Joel Ward (0-2—2) assisted on both tallies.

* Rinne posted his 37th career shutout and second consecutive against the Oilers (37 SV in 1-0 OT W on Nov. 27, 2014). Rinne’s 37 career shutouts are tied for the second-most in the NHL since he recorded his first in 2008-09 (Henrik Lundqvist: 38).

* Craig Smith provided the game-winning goal, the 10th such tally of his career. Filip Forsberg added the other marker – he scored the overtime winner when Rinne and the Predators last shut out the Oilers.

AROUND THE RINKS
* Two nights after surrendering a three-goal lead in the third period of their season opener, the Avalanche scored five unanswered goals to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win their seventh consecutive game against the Stars dating to Jan. 27, 2014 (DAL: 0-5-2). Four Avalanche players registered multiple points: Gabriel Landeskog (2-2—4), Nathan MacKinnon (1-2—3), Francois Beauchemin (0-2—2) and Alex Tanguay (0-2—2).Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves, including 21 over the final two periods, to pick up his ninth straight win over the Stars since the start of the 2013-14 season.

* The Maple Leafs overcame 3-0 and 4-3 deficits to force overtime, but Bobby Ryan andMike Hoffman both scored in the shootout to lift the Senators to a 3-0-2 record in the last five meetings of the Battle of Ontario dating to Jan. 21 (TOR: 2-2-1). Ottawa notched three power-play goals – by Kyle Turris (1-1—2), Alex Chiasson and Milan Michalek – in a 4:10 span of the second period; Elias says that they were the fastest three power-play goals in franchise history. Erik Karlsson (0-3—3) and Mark Stone (1-1—2) also contributed multiple points; Karlsson last posted three assists in one game on March 26, 2012 at WPG.

* Even at 1-1 late in the second period, Zach Parise and Charlie Coyle (2-0—2) scored 21 seconds apart to power the Wild past the Blues in their first meeting since the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game series victory by Minnesota. Coyle’s second goal was upheld after St. Louis unsuccessfully challenged the original call. Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves, including 12 in the final frame, to help the Wild improve to 13-0-2 in 15 all-time home openers at Xcel Energy Center.

* Tied at 1-1 late in the middle frame, the Lightning scored three unanswered goals – byNikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos and J.T. Brown – to pick up their fifth consecutive victory over the Sabres dating to Dec. 4, 2014 (BUF: 0-5-0). Tampa Bay also extended its point streak at First Niagara Center to five games dating to Oct. 8, 2013 (4-0-1). Ben Bishop made 24 saves to improve to 7-0-1 in eight career games against the Sabres (1.71 GAA, .933 SV%, 1 SO) – that includes a 6-0-0 record since joining the Lightning (1.32 GAA, .939 SV%, 1 SO).

* Jordan Martinook scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the second period – the first of his NHL career (10 GP) – to lift the Coyotes past the Penguins and to their second win in as many days. The 58th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Draft, Martinook made his League debut on Dec. 6, 2014, and skated in eight games with the Coyotes last season. Mike Smith made 27 saves to earn his fifth win in 13 career appearances against the Penguins (2.23 GAA, .918 SV%, 2 SO).

* Down 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Red Wings scored three straight goals to open the third period – including a pair by Teemu Pulkkinen – and rally past the Hurricanes. After recording a hat trick (including the GWG) on Friday, Justin Abdelkader again provided what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Red Wings improved to 10-2-0 in their last 12 meetings with the Hurricanes dating to Dec. 9, 2007, including four consecutive wins (CAR: 2-9-1).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS
* Three players scored their first NHL goals: Coyotes forward Jordan Martinook (10 GP), Canucks forward Jared McCann (2 GP) and Blackhawks defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (21 GP).

* Six players scored their first goals with their new teams: Matt Beleskey (BOS), Erik Condra (TBL), Dougie Hamilton (CGY), Phil Kessel (PIT), Reilly Smith (FLA) andDaniel Winnik (TOR).

* Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin, the fifth overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, notched his first NHL assist/point (2 GP).

* Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec (1-0—1) recorded his 500th NHL point (203-297—500). Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen (1-1—2) posted his 200th NHL point (40-160—200).

* Stars defenseman Jason Demers (0-2—2) collected his 100th NHL assist.

* Islanders goaltender Jean-Francois Berube (30 SV), Panthers forward Connor Brickley (9:12 TOI) and Devils forward Brian O’Neill (9:39 TOI) all made their NHL debuts.

* Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic played in his 672nd NHL game (all w/ SJS) to surpass Mike Rathje for the most games played by a defenseman in franchise history.

* Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne played in his 383rd NHL game (all w/ NSH) to tieTomas Vokoun for the most games played by a goaltender in franchise history.

* Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader and Senators forward Kyle Turris both played in their 400th NHL games.

LOOSE PUCKS
Stars forward Mattias Janmark scored 20 seconds after the opening face-off. Elias notes that Janmark, who also scored 1:39 into his NHL debut on Thursday, became the fourth player in Stars/North Stars history to record a goal in each of his first two games. The others: Neal Broten (March 31 – April 4, 1981), Mike Modano (Oct. 5-7, 1989) and Brett Ritchie (Dec. 31 – Jan. 3, 2015) . . . Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg (1-1—2) has 11-8—19 in 14 career games vs. CAR, including 5-6—11 over the past four seasons (6 GP) . . . Capitals forward Justin Williams collected two assists in his team debut, while teammate Brooks Orpik scored his first goal with the club (79 GP) . . . Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek made a career-high 44 saves . . . Celebrating his 39th birthday, Coyotes captain Shane Doan appeared in his 1,396th game to move into sole possession of 34th place in NHL history.
