Forward Connor McDavid, the top overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, plays in his first regular-season game with the Oilers (Edmonton @ St. Louis, 8:00 p.m., SN360).

Friday, Oct. 9
The Islanders play their first regular-season game at Barclays Center, facing the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks (Chicago @ NY Islanders, 7:30 p.m., NHLN-US) . . . Former Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock returns to Detroit as the bench boss of the Maple Leafs. Babcock’s former assistant coach, Jeff Blashill, also makes his head-coaching debut in the NHL (Toronto @ Detroit, 7:30 p.m., SN, TVAS).

Saturday, Oct. 10
Twenty-eight of the NHL’s 30 teams play on the opening Saturday of the regular season . . . The Canadiens visit the Bruins in a preview of the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic (Montreal @ Boston, 7:00 p.m., NHLN-US, HNIC, TVAS) . . . The Senators and Maple Leafs renew the Battle of Ontario (Ottawa @ Toronto, 7:00 p.m., HNIC) . . . The Blues visit the Wild in their first meeting since the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game series victory by Minnesota (St. Louis @ Minnesota, 8:00 p.m.).

Sunday, Oct. 11
Rogers Hometown Hockey visits Kitchener, Ont., as the Canadiens face the Senators in their first meeting since the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game series victory by Montreal (Montreal @ Ottawa, 7:00 p.m., NHLN-US, SN).
