WESTERN WILD CARD OCCUPANTS ESCAPE WITH WINS . . .
The Jets (29-19-10, 68 points) and Flames (31-22-3, 65 points) – who currently occupy the first and second Wild Card spots in the Western Conference, respectively – picked up narrow victories on Saturday:

* New acquisition Drew Stafford scored in regulation and also potted the lone goal in the shootout to propel the Jets to their third victory in their past four games. Tyler Myers, who also was acquired on Wednesday, added two assists for his first multi-point performance since Nov. 18 vs. SJS (0-2—2 w/ BUF).

* Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little also recorded a pair of helpers. Andrew Ladd, Chris Thorburn and Blake Wheeler provided the other regulation goals for the Jets, who improved to 5-2-0 in their past seven meetings with the Red Wings dating to Nov. 25, 2009.

* Michael Hutchinson made 25 saves through overtime and denied all four shootout attempts he faced to earn his 16th win of the season, tied for first among rookie goaltenders (w/ Jake Allen). He ranks seventh overall with a 2.24 goals-against average and eighth with a .923 save percentage.

* Knotted at 2-2 after 40 minutes, Lance Bouma netted the tiebreaking goal early in the third period to lead the Flames past the Canucks and to their fifth win in their past seven starts. Bouma has two game-winning goals in his past three outings (also Feb. 9 at SJS); he had one such goal in his first 172 career appearances.

* Sean Monahan (2-0—2) registered his third career multi-goal game and first since Oct. 23 vs. CAR (2-0—2). He has 19-17—36 this season (56 GP), eclipsing his point total from his rookie campaign in 2013-14 (22-12—34 in 75 GP).

* The Flames improved to 18-5-1 versus Pacific Division opponents this season, including a 2-1-1 mark against the Canucks (VAN: 2-2-0). Calgary tied Vancouver (31-21-3, 65 points) – in terms of points – for third place in the Pacific Division, but the Canucks hold one game in hand and own the ROW tiebreaker (VAN: 29, CGY: 28). The clubs do not meet again in 2014-15.

. . . CLOSEST CONTENDERS KEEP PACE WITH VICTORIES
Three of the closest contenders for Wild Card berths in the West – the Wild, Kings and Avalanche – also recorded victories on Saturday to keep pace in the playoff race:

* Thomas Vanek notched 2-1—3 to help the Wild extend their point streak to 10 games (8-0-2), matching a franchise record last achieved March 8-27, 2007 (9-0-1). Vanek recorded his first multi-goal game in a Minnesota uniform and the 49th of his career. Per Elias, only four players have posted more multi-goal performances since Vanek’s NHL debut in October 2005: Alex Ovechkin (94), Jarome Iginla (66), Sidney Crosby (61) and Rick Nash (54).

* Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves to improve to 10-1-1 with a 1.60 goals-against average, .938 save percentage and four shutouts since joining the Wild on Jan. 14. Overall, he has a 19-6-3 record this season (32 GP), one win shy of his career high established in 2011-12 (47 GP w/ EDM).

* Erik Haula, Zach Parise, Nate Prosser and Jordan Schroeder added the other goals for the Wild. Justin Fontaine, Mikael Granlund and Jared Spurgeon all contributed two assists.

* Jonathan Quick made 27 saves, including 13 in the third period, to backstop the Kings to their fourth consecutive victory, their longest winning streak since Oct. 12-26 (6-0-0). Quick has been in net for all four games, compiling a 2.25 goals-against average and .955 save percentage during that span.

* Dwight King, Trevor Lewis and Jarret Stoll found the back of the net. Lewis potted the decisive marker, snapping a 19-game goal drought dating to Dec. 22 vs. CGY. It marked Lewis’ seventh goal of the season (46 GP), surpassing his career high established in 2013-14 (73 GP).

* The Kings improved to 18-6-6 (42 points) at STAPLES Center this season. Their 42 points through 30 home games are a franchise record, eclipsing the previous mark of 41 achieved in 1974-75 and 2005-06. The Kings also improved to 8-1-0 in their past nine meetings with the Capitals dating to Nov. 20, 2008, including five straight wins in Los Angeles.

* Semyon Varlamov recorded 24 saves to help the Avalanche snap a four-game skid and defeat the team directly ahead of them in the Wild Card standings, the Stars. Varlamov improved to 8-3-2 with a 2.93 goals-against average and .909 save percentage in 13 career appearances vs. DAL.

* Dennis Everberg and Alex Tanguay both collected 1-1—2. Jarome Iginla added his 578th career goal to surpass Mark Recchi and move into sole possession of 19th place in NHL history. His 1,205 career points are tied with Vincent Damphousse for 45th all-time.

* The Avalanche improved to 8-1-0 in their past nine meetings with the Stars dating to Oct. 15, 2013. The clubs face off one more time this season – on Feb. 27 at DAL.

PRICE, CANADIENS EDGE MAPLE LEAFS TO MAINTAIN FIRST
Carey Price made 28 saves through overtime – and then denied two attempts in the shootout – to guide the Canadiens to their fourth victory in their past five games (4-0-1).

* At 36-15-4 (76 points), the Canadiens maintained the top spot in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division – one point ahead of the Islanders (37-18-1, 75 points) and two points ahead of the Lightning (34-17-6, 74 points), respectively.

* Price earned his fourth straight personal win, allowing two or fewer goals in each contest. Elias says he is 17-3-1 with a 1.46 goals-against average in his past 21 appearances, yielding two or fewer goals in each victory.

* Overall, Price has compiled a 31-11-2 record with a 1.98 goals-against average, .934 save percentage and four shutouts this season. He leads the NHL in save percentage and ranks second in both wins (tied) and goals-against average.

* Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais both found the back of the net in the shootout. Brendan Gallagher scored the Canadiens’ lone goal in regulation, 41 seconds after the Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead in the first period.

* P.K. Subban (0-1—1) logged a career-high 35:21, also the highest single-game total by any player this season.

* The Canadiens earned their fourth straight victory over the Maple Leafs dating to March 1, 2014. They meet two more times in 2014-15 – Feb. 28 at MTL and April 11 at TOR (the final day of the regular season).

ISLANDERS, RANGERS WIN IN ADVANCE OF MONDAY SHOWDOWN
Both the Islanders and Rangers won on Saturday in advance of their Monday showdown at Nassau Coliseum:

* The top line of John Tavares (2-2—4), Anders Lee (0-4—4) and Josh Bailey (2-1—3) combined for 4-7—11 to power the Islanders to their fourth consecutive victory. At 37-18-1, the Islanders tied a franchise record for wins through the opening 56 games of one season, set in 1981-82 (37-13-6).

* Tavares recorded his ninth career game of four or more points and first since Jan. 6, 2014 vs. DAL (3-2—5). Lee set a career high for assists/points in one game; he has 3-5—8 during a four-game point streak. Bailey notched his sixth career multi-goal game and first since April 11, 2013 at BOS (2-0—2).

* Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves to pick up his fifth straight victory and 31st of the season, one shy of the franchise record shared by Billy Smith (1981-82), Chris Osgood (2001-02) and Rick DiPietro (2006-07).

* The Islanders improved to 18-2-0 versus the Metropolitan Division this season, including 11 straight wins and an 11-0-0 mark at home.

* Even at 1-1 after 40 minutes, the Rangers scored four unanswered goals in the third period to earn their third consecutive win. Rick Nash potted the tiebreaking goal, his League-leading 35th marker of the season. He also shares fifth in the NHL with six game-deciding goals after establishing a career high with nine such tallies in 2013-14.

* Kevin Hayes notched his first career shorthanded goal to extend his point streak to five games (3-4—7), matching a career high set Nov. 29 – Dec. 13 (2-3—5). Chris Kreider, Marc Staal and Lee Stempniak provided the other goals, while Kevin Klein (0-2—2) and Derek Stepan (0-2—2) both added multi-point performances.

* Cam Talbot made a season-high 34 saves, including 14 in the third period, to pick up his third straight win. He is 8-5-2 overall with a 2.35 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and three shutouts.

* The Rangers also scored five goals in the opening two games of their road trip, wins at TOR (5-4) and COL (6-3). Per Elias, they have posted at least five goals in each of three consecutive games, all on the road, for the first time since Jan. 18-21, 1989, when they won at CHI (6-4), STL (5-0) and VAN (5-4 OT).

Highlights from the rest of Saturday’s action:
