2014-15 SEASON HITS MIDWAY POINT
The 2014-15 season passed the midway mark on Saturday, with 624 of 1,230 games (50.7%) in the books. A look at some of the highlights thus far (compiled with the assistance of the Elias Sports Bureau):

COMPETITIVE BALANCE
* Through Saturday’s games, 23 teams are within eight points of a playoff berth. In 2013-14, 25 clubs returned from the Olympic break within four points of a playoff berth; there was a four-way tie for the final two Eastern Conference playoff spots with two weeks left in the season; and seven of the eight playoff matchups were finalized over the final weekend of the regular season.

* The top 12 teams in the NHL are separated by just 10 points. In 2013-14, the League’s top seven finishers entered the playoffs separated by 10 points.

* Five teams that did not qualify for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs currently hold postseason berths (NSH, NYI, VAN, WSH, WPG).There has been a playoff turnover of at least five clubs in seven of the past nine seasons.

OVERALL NUMBERS
* 390 games (62.5%) have been tied or within one goal entering the third period.

* 315 games (50.5%) have featured one-goal margins. Another 54 have been decided by two goals following an empty-net score (combined, 59.1%).

* 267 games (42.8%) have seen a team overcome a deficit (at any point in the contest) to win, including 116 in the third period. Of those 267 games, 56 have featured a multi-goal comeback.

* 163 games (26.1%) have gone past regulation, 75 of which have been decided in the five-minute overtime period. That’s nearly 7% higher through the same number of overtime games in 2013-14.

* 58 games (9.3%) have seen a tying goal scored in the final five minutes of regulation, including 14 in the last 60 seconds.

RANGERS STAY HOT, COMPLETE CALIFORNIA SWEEP . . .
Chris Kreider posted 1-1—2, including the eventual game-winning goal to help the Rangers improve to 13-1-0 in their last 14 games, their best such stretch since winning 14 of 15 from Jan. 7 to Feb. 10, 1973 (14-0-1).

* The Rangers have won each of their last five games, including a perfect 3-0-0 mark on their swing through California. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rangers swept a road trip against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks for the first time in franchise history.

* Elias also says the Rangers are just the second Eastern Conference team in NHL history to earn road wins against the Sharks, Ducks, Kings, Canucks, Flames and Oilers in one season. The 1997-98 Canadiens, who also were coached by Alain Vigneault, were the first club to accomplish the feat.

* Henrik Lundqvist earned his 20th win of the season to become the first goaltender in NHL history to post at least 20 wins in each of his first 10 seasons. Over his last 12 games, Lundqvist has registered an 11-1-0 record with a 1.57 goals-against average, .939 save percentage and one shutout.

* Rick Nash scored his 26th goal into an empty net to move into a share of the League lead with Tyler Seguin. Nash has 3-2—5 on his current four-game point streak.

* Derek Stepan (0-2—2) ranks second on the Rangers with 21 assists despite playing in only 27 of the club’s 39 games.

. . . METROPOLITAN RIVALS ALSO WINNERS
The Islanders (28-13-1, 57 points), Penguins (25-10-6, 56 points) and Capitals (22-11-8, 52 points) also earned victories on Saturday in a crowded Metropolitan Division.

* Five different players found the back of the net, including goals by Matt Martin, Anders Lee and Brian Strait in the second period, to help the Islanders match their best 42-game start – in terms of wins (also 28 in 1978-79) – in franchise history.

* Strait (1-1—2) posted his first multi-point game since Jan. 18, 2014 at PHI (1-1—2) while Ryan Strome and ThomasHickey each contributed two assists. Nikolay Kulemin and Kyle Okposo also scored for the Islanders. Okposo ranks second on the club with 9-28—37 in 42 appearances.

* Evgeni Malkin tied the game late in the third period and recorded the primary helper on Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal to lift the Penguins to their ninth win in their last 12 meetings with the Canadiens (9-1-2 dating to Oct. 20, 2011).

* Malkin posted his 13th multi-point game of the season to move into third in League scoring with 19-28—47 in 41 GP. He has registered at least one point in 31 games this season, tied with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek for the most in the NHL.

* Crosby scored his seventh career overtime goal to move into a share of second in franchise history with Mario Lemieux and Malkin; Jaromir Jagr leads with nine. Crosby has registered a point in 10 of his last 11 games against the Canadiens and has totaled 17-21—38 in 28 career matchups.

* Making his 24th consecutive appearance, Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots to guide the Capitals to their fifth straight win at Verizon Center. Overall, the Capitals have earned points in six consecutive games since Dec. 27 at PIT (4-0-2). Holtby improved to 20-8-7, his third consecutive season with at least 20 victories. He has posted a 15-4-5 record over his span of 24 consecutive appearances.

* Troy Brouwer, John Carlson and Eric Fehr each found the back of the net for the Capitals. Carlson notched his fourth career game-winning goal and first since Jan. 16, 2011 vs. OTT.

RINNE (AGAIN) BACKSTOPS PREDATORS TO VICTORY . . .
Pekka Rinne stopped 36 shots, including 14 in the third period, to record his League-leading 28th win and help the Predators earn their third straight victory.

* The Predators (28-9-4, 60 points) improved to 12-3-2 against Central Division foes this season to remain atop the NHL standings; they hold a two-point lead on both the Ducks (26-10-6, 58 points) and Lightning (27-12-4, 58 points).

* Per Elias, this marks Nashville’s best 41-game start by wins and points in franchise history, besting the previous mark of 27 wins and 57 points in 2006-07.

* Elias also says that Rinne is the second goalie since 2008-09 to backstop his team to each of their first 28 wins in a season. Miikka Kiprusoff accomplished the feat with Calgary in both 2007-08 and 2008-09.

* Rinne ranks in the top five in goals-against average (2nd; 1.98), save percentage (3rd; .930) and shutouts (t-3rd; 3). He improved to 11-4-2 in 18 career appearances against the Wild.

* Colin Wilson (1-1—2) posted his seventh multi-point outing of the season. He shares third on the club with 12 goals in 39 GP, surpassing his 81-game total from 2013-14. Calle Jarnkrok potted his first career game-winning goal while Mike Fisher also found the back of the net.

. . . BLUES RALLY TO KEEP PACE IN CENTRAL
The Blues faced deficits of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3, before Vladimir Tarasenko scored at 6:46 of the third period to force extra time where T.J. Oshie potted the shoot-out deciding goal. Oshie shares fifth all-time with 15 game-deciding goals; he is 28-for-52 (53.8%) in tiebreakers.

* Tarasenko scored his 23rd goal and set a new career high with 44 points this season (42 GP); he trails only Tyler Seguin and Rick Nash for the League lead in goals (both have 26).

* Kevin Shattenkirk became the fifth player to reach 30 assists this season, joining SidneyCrosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek. He paces all defensemen with 37 points (7-30—37).

* Alexander Steen scored to stretch his point streak to six games (4-8—12) while Paul Stastny notched an assist to push his point streak to five games (2-6—8).

* David Backes (5-3—8) and Alex Pietrangelo (0-4—4) each contributed two assists to stretch their point streaks to three games.

STRONG BETWEEN THE PIPES
Calgary's Joni Ortio, Colorado's Semyon Varlamov and Ottawa's Craig Anderson each posted strong performances to backstop their clubs to victories:

* Making his season debut, Joni Ortio denied all 36 shots he faced to record his first career shutout and backstop the Flames to their first win in Vancouver since Dec. 23, 2011 (snapping an eight-game skid, 0-4-4). Per Elias, Ortio is the first Flames goaltender to earn his first NHL shutout in a 1-0 win since Fred Brathwaite on Jan. 8, 1999 vs. DAL. Ortio, who was recalled from the AHL on Jan. 8, had posted 17 wins in 27 games with the Adirondack Flames and was named to the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic just two days before his recall.

* Semyon Varlamov stopped 37 shots, including 16 in the second period, to backstop the Avalanche to their third straight victory and eighth win in their last 11 games. Varlamov improved to 15-3-5 when facing at least 40 shots during his regular-season career. The Avalanche erased an early 2-0 deficit with four straight goals in a span of 12:54 over the final two periods, capped by Matt Duchene’s game-winner 12 seconds into the third period.

* Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots, including 12 in the final frame, to improve to 11-10-6 this season; his .928 save percentage is tied for fourth in the NHL. Clarke MacArthur (1-1—2) and Mika Zibanejad (0-2—2) each posted multiple points to help the Senators erase a 1-0 deficit with five unanswered goals.

AROUND THE RINKS

* After opening a 3-0 lead on their first three shots of the game, the Jets fell behind 4-3 before Zach Bogosian tied the game at 14:04 of the third period and Bryan Little clinched a win in the fourth round of the shootout. With the victory, the Jets (21-14-7, 49 points) overtook the Kings (19-13-10, 48 points) for the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Per Elias, the Jets last won a game in which they surrendered a three-goal lead on Oct. 27, 2011 against the Flyers when they had leads of 5-1 and 6-2 erased before earning a 9-8 victory on the strength of Andrew Ladd’s late game-winner.

* David Pastrnak, Boston’s first-round selection (25th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, scored twice – including his first NHL goal and the game-winner – to help the Bruins win their third straight game and improve to 4-0-3 since Dec. 29. Per Elias, Pastrnak (18 years, 320 days) is just the fifth 18-year-old to score two goals in a game for the Bruins in the last 70 years, and first since Patrice Bergeron (18 years, 172 days) on Jan. 12, 2004 vs. BUF. He is the third 18-year-old to find the back of the net in the NHL this season (also Leon Draisaitl and Aaron Ekblad), and the first to score two goals in a game since Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon had three such performances last season.

LOOSE PUCKS
Flames forward Mikael Backlund potted his second game-winning goal of the season to stretch his goal/point streak to three games (3-2—5) since returning from a 29-game absence. He posted a three-game goal streak once before: Jan. 11-14, 2014 . . . Blue Jackets teammates Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno both extended point streaks after being name to the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game earlier Saturday. Johansen stretched his point streak to 10 games (6-6—12) to match a franchise record for the second time this season; Foligno set a career high with a point in his seventh straight contest (2-8—10) . . . Brothers Michael (ARI) and Mark Stone (OTT) faced off against each other for the first time in their NHL careers . . . Flyers forward Jakub Voracek notched an assist to become the first player to 50 points this season (16-34—50 in 42 GP) . . . Carey Price stopped 35 shots, including a dazzling glove save late in the third period, to help the Canadiens earn a point . . . Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle logged 18:58 TOI and was honored by fans at SAP Center in his return to San Jose, where he played from 2008-14 . . . ICYMI: Kings goaltender Jonathan Quicksprawled out for a highlight-reel save in the shootout . . . Sharks forward Melker Karlsson stretched his goal streak to five games, matching the franchise rookie record first set by Jeff Friesen in 1994-95 . . . Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty stretched his goal streak to four games (4-1—5) to set a new career high . . . Penguins forward Marcel Goc played in his 600th NHL game.
