CLOSE GAMES HIGHLIGHT SATURDAY’S ACTION
Of the 12 games contested Saturday:

* Ten were tied or within one goal entering the third period.

* Eight saw the winning club overcome a deficit at any point in the game, including one third-period comeback that led to a win (ANA-LAK).

* Seven featured one-goal margins, including two that went past regulation (LAK-ANA, PIT-NYR).

* Five saw the game-winning goal scored in the third period, including two decisive goals in the final three minutes of regulation (17:07 by Matt Duchene, COL; 17:58 by Craig Smith, NSH).

UNUSUAL ENDING LEADS TO PENGUINS WIN
In one of the more unusual endings in NHL history, Brandon Sutter scored the winning goal in the shootout to give the Penguins the victory but not before the Rangers had already celebrated what they thought was their own winning goal earlier in the shooout.

* Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle appeared to have scored the deciding goal in the shootout on Marc-Andre Fleury sending New York into celebration mode as the two teams cleared the ice and went to their respective dressing rooms. However, the Situation Room reviewed the apparent winning goal and ruled that Boyle hit the puck twice with his stick and that the goal should not count, setting the stage for Sutter’s unlikely heroics. After Sutter’s goal, Fleury stopped Rick Nash to seal the victory.

* Pittsburgh improved to 6-0-1 in their past seven regular season games against the Rangers at CONSOL Energy Center. Fleury stopped 29 shots and three of four shootout attempts to improve to 18-4-4 in 26 career starts against the Rangers in Pittsburgh.

HABS ROLL TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN
Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau scored twice, including the game-winning goal at 1:02 of the third period as the Canadiens defeated the Flyers 6-3 for their fifth consecutive victory. Montreal owns the League’s longest active winning streak and ranks first overall with 27 points (13-4-1).

* Per Elias, the Canadiens have won eight of their first 10 home games (8-2-0) for the first time since 1992-93 when they started 8-1-1 on home ice. In addition, the Canadiens have won 13 of their first 18 games overall for the first time since 1991-92 when they also began the season with a 13-4-1 record.

* Alex Galchenyuk set a career high with three assists to match his best single-game points total (also Oct. 11, 2013 vs. NYI). He now has 3-6—9 in seven career games vs. PHI.

* Newly acquired defenseman Sergei Gonchar tallied two assists to reach 800 career NHL points (219-581—800 in 1,258 GP). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Gonchar is the only Russian-born defenseman to reach the 800-point milestone.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Canadiens had eight players with at least two points for the first time since Apr. 9, 1994 vs. PIT: Galchenyuk, Parenteau, Gonchar, Dale Weise (2-0—2; career high), David Desharnais (1-1—2), MaxPacioretty (0-2—2), Tomas Plekanec (0-2—2) and Andrei Markov (0-2—2).

* Montreal converted on 100% of their power-play opportunities, scoring three goals with the man advantage for the first time since Mar. 1, 2012 vs. MIN (3-for-7). The club had converted on only four of 47 power-play attempts (8.5%) through its first 17 games.

VORACEK TAKES SCORING LEAD
Flyers forward Jakub Voracek tallied two assists to stretch his point streak to a career-high 10 games (5-14—19) and take sole possession of the League lead in assists (19) and points (26). Voracek has eight multi-point games during his current point streak.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Voracek is the first player in franchise history to record at least eight multi-point outings over a 10-game span. He is also the first Flyers player with a 10-game point streak since Mark Recchi from Feb. 25 to Mar. 19, 2001 (11 games).

* The last Flyers players with at least 26 points through the team’s first 16 games were Peter Forsberg (31 points) and Simon Gagne (26) in 2005-06.

BLUES MAKE IT TEN WINS IN 11 GAMES
Jaden Schwartz assisted on Jori Lehtera’s opening goal then potted the eventual game-winner as the Blues skated to a 4-1 victory over the Capitals for their 10th win in 11 games.

* Schwartz (2-8—10, six games) and Lehtera (5-6—11, seven games) – two-thirds of the “STL Line” – each extended their point streaks while linemate Vladimir Tarasenko had his point streak halted at seven games. During the Blues’ current 10-1-0 stretch, the trio has combined for 18-23—41, a +34 rating and four game-winning goals.

* Kevin Shattenkirk posted multiple assists for the fifth time this season to stretch his point streak to three games (0-5—5). He is tied with Calgary’s Mark Giordano for the assists lead among defenseman – the two also share fourth in the NHL in that category.

* Brian Elliott turned aside 24 of 25 shots to move to 7-3-1 with a 1.87 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage in 11 games this season.

LIGHTNING STRIKE DOWN ISLANDERS
Ryan Callahan (1-1—2), Valtteri Filppula (1-1—2) and Jason Garrison (0-2—2) each posted multi-point games as the Lightning overcame a 2-1 deficit with four unanswered goals in a 5-2 win over the Islanders. The Lightning improved to 7-1-1 in their past nine outings while halting New York’s winning streak at five games.

*Cedric Paquette’s fifth goal in his past five games counted as his first career game-winner while Steven Stamkos notched an assist to stretch his point streak to five games (3-3—6).

* Ben Bishop turned aside 25 shots to improve to 10-2-2 this season (15 GP). Per Elias, his 10 wins in 15 GP makes him the second-fastest goaltender to reach double digit wins in franchise history – he set the record in 2013-14 by starting the season 10-0-0.

* The Lightning remain the League’s highest scoring team (65 goals) and found the back of the net at least five times for the fifth time this season.

* Tampa Bay improved to 11-0-0 when Callahan records a goal dating to last season when he was acquired from the Rangers.

FLAMES CONTINUE STRONG START
The Flames scored three goals in the third period, including Josh Jooris’ first career game-winning goal, to earn a 4-2 win over the Senators. Calgary improved to 6-2-1 in their past nine outings.

* Mark Giordano recorded an assist to push his point streak to nine games (5-9—14), matching the longest stretch of his career set last season from Jan. 14 to Feb. 1. He shares the League lead among defensemen in goals (6) and assists (15) and paces all blueliners with 21 points.

* At 11-6-2 (24), the Flames are within two points of Anaheim for top spot in the Pacific Division.

KINGS, BRUINS, WILD RALLY FOR MATINEE WINS . . .
The Kings, Bruins and Wild all overcame one-goal deficits to win their matinee games:

* Jarret Stoll scored the game-winning goal at 2:19 of overtime to lift the Kings over the Ducks at STAPLES Center. Los Angeles trailed twice before capping their comeback in overtime, just three days after surrendering three separate two-goal deficits in a shootout loss at Anaheim.

* This was Stoll’s fourth career regular season overtime goal, his previous one was almost nine years to the day (Nov. 17, 2005 vs. DET, while with Edmonton).

* Seth Griffith and Patrice Bergeron scored to erase a one-goal deficit in the first period and Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots to lift the Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Hurricanes.

* Down 1-0 in the middle frame, Erik Haula tied the score and Mikael Granlund scored the game-winner 40 seconds into the third period to lift the Wild to a 2-1 win over the Stars. Minnesota earned its first victory at American Airlines Center since Mar. 25, 2013 and just their fifth win in Dallas all-time (5-16-6).

. . . PREDS, AVS DO THE SAME AT NIGHT
The Predators and Avalanche also overcame deficits to win their Saturday night contests:

* James Neal tied the game in the second period and Craig Smith scored his first game-winning goal of the season with 2:02 left in regulation to lift the Predators to a 2-1 win over the Jets. Neal’s goal was his team-leading ninth of the season; he now has points in four straight games (2-3—5). The Predators share the League lead with seven wins when allowing the first goal this season (7-4-1).

* Facing a one-goal deficit for the second time in the game, Erik Johnson tied the game at 12:30 of the third period before Matt Duchene netted the game-winning goal to lift Colorado to 3-2 win in New Jersey. The Avalanche improved to 6-0-1 in their past seven meetings against the Devils.

Tyler Toffoli scored his fourth shorthanded goal of the season in the club’s 18th game to become the fastest player in Kings history to score as many goals while shorthanded. Bernie Nicholls set the previous mark of 26 games in 1988-89 when he finished the season with eight such goals.

* The last player from any team to score four shorthanded goals within the team’s first 18 games was Simon Gagne in 2008-09 with Philadelphia (15 games).

* The Kings now lead the League with five shorthanded goals this season, matching their 82-game total from 2013-14.

Matt Moulson and Tyler Ennis each tallied a goal and two assists to power the Sabres to a 6-2 win over the Maple Leafs. Buffalo improved to 14-1-1 in their past 16 home games against Toronto and scored at least six goals at First Niagara Center for the first time since Apr. 3, 2012 when they defeated TOR 6-5 in overtime.

* Ennis matched a career high with three points (6x; last: Feb. 7, 2013 at MTL); he leads the club with 6-6—12 this season.

* Drew Stafford tallied 1-1—2 including his first game-winning goal since Dec. 19, 2013 vs. BOS. Stafford (1-3—4), Ennis (2-3—5) and Moulson (1-4—5) all stretched their point streaks to three games.

LOOSE PUCKS
David Savard and Cam Atkinson propelled the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 36 shots in his return from an eight-game absence as Columbus skated to a 2-1 win over San Jose. The victory was the 100th of Bobrovsky’s NHL career . . . Predators forward Filip Forsberg was held off the scoresheet for the first time since Oct. 29 (7-6—13 in seven games), but still leads all rookies in goals (8), assists (12), points (20) and paces all players with a +19 rating . . .
