NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* A total of 102 goals were scored on the NHL’s 17th all-time 15-game day (including three shootout-deciding goals), highlighted by two teams recording at least six and a pair of players registering hat tricks. Saturday featured the second-most goals scored on one day in NHL history, one shy of the 103 from a 12-game slate on Jan. 23, 1993.

* Ten of 15 games contested Saturday were decided by a one-goal margin, one shy of the most on one day in League history (11 of 12 GP on April 5, 2018). Seven of those games required overtime, which also fell just short of the single-day NHL record (8 GP on Feb. 22, 2007, Nov. 27, 2015 and Feb. 7, 2019).

* The busiest day of the season thus far also featured five teams overcoming a deficit to win, including three multi-goal comebacks.

EICHEL SCORES CAREER-HIGH FOUR GOALS IN WIN
Jack Eichel scored a career-high four goals to help the Sabres defeat the Senators and snap a six-game slide (0-4-2). He became the seventh different player in franchise history to score four or more goals in a regular-season game and first since Thomas Vanek on April 10, 2010, also against Ottawa.

* Eichel has recorded 23 career points against the Senators (9-14—23 in 14 GP), his highest total versus one franchise. His career points per game average of 1.64 against Ottawa is the third-highest such total in franchise history (min. 20 P), behind Pat LaFontaine (1.93 P/GP; 14-15—29 in 15 GP) and Alexander Mogilny (1.87 P/GP; 8-20—28 in 15 GP).

McDAVID JOINS DRAISAITL IN 40-POINT CLUB
Oilers captain Connor McDavid (14-26—40 in 22 GP) collected three assists to become the second player to reach the 40-point mark this season, joining teammate Leon Draisaitl (16-27—43 in 22 GP) who had 1-1—2 Saturday. McDavid and Draisaitl became the third set of teammates in the last 30 years each with 40 or more points through their team’s first 22 games in a season.

* The Oilers feature multiple players each with 40 or more points through their first 22 games in a season for the third time in franchise history, following Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri combining for the feat in both 1983-84 and 1984-85.

* McDavid has registered nine points in his last two games (3-6—9) and extended his scoring streak to seven contests overall (8-9—17). Draisaitl pushed his point streak to 12 games (10-17—27), the longest active run in the NHL.

MAKAR COLLECTS FOUR ASSISTS TO ECLIPSE 20 CAREER POINTS
Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar collected four assists – including one on the overtime winner by Nathan MacKinnon (2-1—3) – to eclipse 20 career regular-season points (5-17—22 in 20 GP). Makar required the sixth-fewest games to reach 20 career points among players to debut with the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise.

* Makar became the fourth defenseman in NHL history to record 20 or more points through their 20th career regular-season game, joining Toronto’s Harry Cameron on March 2, 1918 (17-10—27), Los Angeles’ Larry Murphy on Nov. 22, 1980 (5-19—24) and Toronto’s Hap Day on Feb. 18, 1925 (7-16—23).

* Makar became the second rookie defenseman in franchise history to record four points in a game, joining Quebec’s Jeff Brown on Oct. 13, 1986 (1-3—4 vs./at VAN). Makar leads all rookies in scoring this season, owning eight more points than the next-closest players (Victor Olofsson: 7-7—14 in 19 GP; Martin Necas: 4-10—14 in 20 GP).

ISLANDERS, CAPITALS AND STARS EXTEND NOTEWORTHY POINT STREAKS
The Islanders, Capitals and Stars each secured comeback wins Saturday to extend noteworthy point streaks:

* The Islanders rallied from a 3-0 third-period deficit to earn a shootout win against the Flyers and extend their point streak to 14 contests (13-0-1), the lengthiest by any team this season and the franchise’s fourth-longest behind 15-game runs from Nov. 4 – Dec. 9, 1978 (12-0-3), Nov. 4 – Dec. 2, 1980 (13-0-2) and Jan. 21 – Feb. 20, 1982 (15-0-0). New York overcame a third-period deficit of three or more goals to win a road game for the fifth time in franchise history and first since March 10, 2014.

* The Capitals overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn a shootout win against the Bruins and extend their road point streak to nine games (8-0-1), the longest in the NHL this season. Washington posted a road point streak of nine or more games for the fifth time in franchise history and move within one of the longest.

* The Stars erased a 4-2 third-period deficit to earn an overtime win against the Oilers and extend their point streak to eight contests (7-0-1), Dallas’ longest since an 11-game run from Feb. 21 – March 13, 2012 (10-0-1). The franchise record for longest point streak is 15 games, a mark set from Dec. 6, 1998 – Jan. 6, 1999 (12-0-3).

PLETHORA OF MILESTONES REACHED SATURDAY
A plethora of milestones were reached Saturday:

* Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville became the second in NHL history to record 900 career regular-season wins, joining Scotty Bowman (1,244). Quenneville reached the milestone in his 1,656th career game, while Bowman did so in his 1,553rd contest on March 25, 1995 with Detroit.

* Lightning captain Steven Stamkos (1-1—2) scored the 400th regular-season goal of his NHL career (400-386—786 in 763 GP). He became the seventh active NHL player to reach the 400-goal mark and required the second-fewest games to reach the milestone among that cohort, behind Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (400-375—775 in 634 GP).

* Kings forward Jeff Carter scored the winning goal while skating in the 1,000th regular-season game of his NHL career, becoming the 11th first-round pick from the 2003 NHL Draft – and third this season – to reach the milestone. That matches the 1979 draft class for the most first-round picks to skate 1,000 or more regular-season games; of note, 1979 was the first year in which the minimum age of players subject to the NHL Draft was lowered from 20 to 18, resulting in three years’ worth of players eligible to be selected.

* Erik Karlsson scored while skating in the 700th regular-season game of his NHL career to help the Sharks extend their win streak to six contests. His 579 career points (131-448—579) were the most by a defenseman through their 700th regular-season game since Brian Leetch on Jan. 31, 1998 (160-523—683 w/ NYR).

* Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau collected the 250th, 251st and 252nd regular-season assists of his NHL career to pass Stephen Weiss (249) for the most in franchise history. Huberdeau (134-252—386 in 487) moved within eight regular-season points of matching Weiss (145-249—394 in 654 GP) for second place on the franchise’s all-time list, which is topped by Olli Jokinen (188-231—419 in 567 GP).

LEAGUE-WIDE MOMENT OF SILENCE OBSERVED FOR HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER
A pre-game moment of silence was observed in all 15 arenas which hosted a contest Saturday, honoring the patients and families of those battling or moving past cancer. Fans in attendance were also encouraged to turn their cell phone flashlights on during the salute.

* Five teams hosted their official Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Saturday, including Arizona which signed cancer patient Leighton Accardo to a contract and welcomed the eight-year-old to drop the ceremonial puck. Coyotes captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson switched places with his courageous guest, allowing Accardo to take the faceoff against Flames captain Mark Giordano.
