NHL Short Notes

11/08/2019 at 7:30am EST

THREE HARD LAPS

* A total of 78 goals were scored Thursday (7.09 G/GP), including two games which featured both teams combining for at least 10. It marked the fourth day to feature as many total goals this season, following Oct. 5 (84), Oct. 10 (79) and Oct. 12 (90).

* Five opening-minute goals were scored Thursday (John Carlson, Casey Cizikas, Cale Makar, Gustav Nyquist and Logan Couture), tied for the most on one day in NHL history (also Oct. 15, 1981, Jan. 1, 2000 and Feb. 24, 2018).

* Thursday’s slate also featured six comeback wins and five games which required overtime.

VALANCHE ESTABLISH FRANCHISE RECORD FOR FASTEST SIX GOALS IN A GAME
The Avalanche scored six times in a span of 8:00 during the second period to establish a franchise record for fastest six goals in a game, eclipsing the previous mark of 8:06 set by the Quebec Nordiques on Feb. 22, 1981 (11-7 W at WSH). Colorado became the third NHL team in the last 20 years to score six goals in a span of 8:00 or less in a game.

* The Avalanche scored the most goals in a game by any team this season. Colorado recorded nine or more goals in a contest for the fifth time since the franchise began play in Denver and first since nearly 12 years ago on Dec. 9, 2007 (9-5 W vs. STL).

* The Avalanche matched a franchise record for most goals in a period, a feat they have achieved three other times since 1995-96: Dec. 5, 1995 (12-2 W vs. SJS), March 3, 1999 (7-5 W at COL) and Jan. 19, 2019 (7-1 W vs. LAK).

* Joonas Donskoi (3-0—3), one of five Colorado players with three or more points Thursday, scored the first hat trick of his NHL career. Donskoi (8-3—11 in 16 GP), who was signed by the Avalanche July 1, became the 15th player to score a hat trick in his first 16 or fewer games with the franchise – last accomplished by Joe Colborne in his Colorado debut on Oct. 15, 2016 (3-0—3 vs. DAL).

DID YOU KNOW?
Brothers Peter Stastny (4-4—8) and Anton Stastny (3-5—8) each recorded eight points with the Nordiques in the abovesaid game on Feb. 22, 1981. Their 16 combined points remain the most by any two brothers in an NHL game (as teammates or opponents), three more than the collective total of 13 by Chicago Black Hawks forwards Max Bentley (4-3—7) and Doug Bentley (2-4—6) on Jan. 28, 1943 (10-1 W vs. NYR).

PENGUINS RALLY TO SNAP ISLANDERS’ WIN STREAK AT 10 GAMES
Pittsburgh overcame a 3-0 deficit in the third period and Bryan Rust (2-0—2) scored with 1:35 remaining in overtime as the Penguins snapped the Islanders’ win streak at 10 games. Pittsburgh became the first team in NHL history to overcome a deficit of at least three goals to snap an opponent’s win streak of 10 or more games.

* The Islanders’ run was their second-longest win streak in franchise history behind a 15-game mark set over 37 years ago from Jan. 21 – Feb. 20, 1982 – which coincidentally was also snapped by the Penguins (4-3 W). Pittsburgh became the fourth team in NHL history to snap a win streak of 10 or more games multiple times against the same franchise.

* The Penguins overcame a third-period deficit of at least three goals to win a regular-season game for the 10th time in franchise history and first since Jan. 31, 2012 (5-4 SO W vs. TOR).

CARLSON ECLIPSES 25 POINTS AS NHL-LEADING CAPITALS RALLY PAST PANTHERS
John Carlson (1-2—3) registered his fourth three-point game of the season – including assisting on the overtime winner by Tom Wilson (2-0—2) – to eclipse the 25-point mark (8-18—26 in 17 GP) and help the NHL-leading Capitals (12-2-3, 27 points) overcome deficits of 3-1 and 4-3 to defeat the Panthers at BB&T Center. Carlson, who leads all defensemen in the three major scoring categories this season, became the seventh different blueliner in NHL history to reach the 25-point mark in 17 or fewer games and first since Calgary’s Al MacInnis (8-17—25 in 13 GP) 29 years ago.

* Carlson (98-331—429 in 705 GP) passed Kevin Hatcher (149-277—426 in 685 GP) and tied Scott Stevens (98-331—429 in 601 GP) for second place on the franchise’s all-time regular-season points list among defensemen, trailing only Calle Johansson (113-361—474 in 983 GP).

* Alex Ovechkin (2-1—3) recorded his 136th career multi-goal game in the regular season to pass Mike Gartner (135) for sole possession of the seventh-most in NHL history. Ovechkin (13-9—22 in 17 GP) has scored a League-leading 12 of his 13 goals this season in road games (12-4—16 in 10 GP).

* The Capitals extended their point streak to 10 games (9-0-1), including five consecutive wins. Washington also improved to 8-1-1 (17 points) as visitors this season and have earned points in each of its last seven road contests (6-0-1).

MATTHEWS JOINS RARE TORONTO COMPANY AS BABCOCK EARNS 700TH WIN
Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews tallied his 13th goal of the season (13-6—19 in 17 GP), including a League-leading 12 which have been scored on home ice (12-5—17 in 11 GP). He became the fifth different player in franchise history to score 12 or more goals through the team’s first 11 home games in a season and just the second in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44).

OF NOTE: Toronto Arenas forward Reg Noble had 14 goals through the team’s 10 total home games contested in 1917-18 (not including the forfeit win on Jan. 5, 1918 vs. MWN)

* Mike Babcock earned his 700th career regular-season win as an NHL head coach and became the eighth in League history to reach the milestone.
