NHL MORNING SKATE

BARZAL’S QUICK PATH TO 100 POINTS
Mathew Barzal (0-2—2) recorded his 25th career multi-point game to boost his career totals to 24-77—101 in 101 GP. Barzal, who collected 22-63—85 in 2017-18 en route to collecting the Calder Memorial Trophy, required the sixth fewest games among active NHL players to record his 100th career point.

* The only Islanders players to require fewer contests to record their 100th career point are a pair of franchise icons: Mike Bossy (57-43—100 in 79 GP) and Bryan Trottier (34-66—100 in 93 GP).

* Only five active NHL players recorded more multi-point outings through their first 101 career games than Barzal’s 25: Sidney Crosby (41),Alex Ovechkin (39), Evgeni Malkin (30), Connor McDavid (30) and Artemi Panarin (27).

THORNTON, KARLSSON REACH MILESTONES IN FRANTIC FINISH
Despite surrendering a 3-0 lead, the Sharks scored two third-period goals in a span of 13 seconds to earn their second win in as many contests.

* Joe Thornton capped the win by notching the game-winning tally - the 400th goal of his NHL career. He became just the 11th player in NHL history to collect at least 400 career goals and 1,000 career assists. Every player who has achieved the feat – other than Jaromir Jagr, who is not yet eligible – has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

* Erik Karlsson (0-1—1) reached the 400-assist milestone (646 GP) to become the 13th fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach the mark and the fifth-fastest Swedish-born player, regardless of position, behind Peter Forsberg (453 GP), Kent Nilsson (510 GP), Nicklas Backstrom(542 GP) and Borje Salming (600 GP).

PANTHERS’ LUONGO CONTINUES SIZZLING START . . .

Roberto Luongo turned aside 30 shots to backstop the Panthers to their fifth consecutive win and improve to 4-0-0 this season (1.33 GAA, .956 SV%). Luongo, who ranks fourth in NHL history with 475 career victories, won his first four decisions of a season for the first time in his 19-season career.

* Luongo (39 years, 223 days) became the fourth goaltender in NHL history age 39 or older to start a season with a 4-0-0 record in his first four decisions, joining Hall of Famers George Hainsworth and Tony Esposito, who also did so at age 39 and Dominik Hasek, who accomplished the feat at age 40.

. . . AS TEAMMATE HOFFMAN TIES BURE’S FRANCHISE RECORD

Mike Hoffman earned an assist on Florida’s opening goal to extend his career-high point streak to 13 games, the longest by any player in the NHL this season and tied Pavel Bure (12-9—21 in 13 GP in 1999-2000) for the longest in Panthers franchise history.

* Only three players in 2017-18 recorded a point streak longer than 13 games: Taylor Hall (13-13—26 in 19 GP), Patrik Laine (18-8—26 in 15 GP) and Nathan MacKinnon (13-14—27 in 14 GP).

* Evgenii Dadonov scored the game-winning goal to extend his point streak to 12 games (7-7—14). He and Hoffman became the first set of teammates to record simultaneous point streaks of at least 12 games since Penguins forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in 2007-08.

OILERS, RED WINGS PUT UP SIX GOALS IN VICTORY
The Oilers (9-8-1, 19 points), and Red Wings (8-8-2, 18 points) each benefited from six-goal outings en route to securing home victories.

* Connor McDavid (10-16—26) collected 0-3—3 to move into a tie with Colorado’s Mikko Rantanen (6-20—26) for the most points this season. Since making his League debut in 2015-16, the Oilers captain has posted an NHL-best 31 games with at least three points. The next closest players over that span are Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin (28) and Chicago’s Patrick Kane (27).

* Rookies Dennis Cholowski and Michael Rasmussen each found the back of the net as the Red Wings scored a season-high six goals to collect their fourth straight victory. It marked the first time the Red Wings had two players age 20 or younger score in the same game since Jeff Sharples and Joe Murphy on Jan. 6, 1988.

* Tuesday’s contests marked the 39th and 40th instances of a team scoring at least six goals in a game this season. Over the last 20 years, only three seasons have featured more such instances through the first 272 contests: 2017-18 (43), 2006-07 (45) and 2005-06 (49).

EARLY STANDOUTS RANTANEN, PASTRNAK FACE OFF IN COLORADO

The Bruins visit the Avalanche at Pepsi Center in a battle between this season’s points leader (tied), Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen (6-20—26 in 17 GP), and top goal scorer, Bruins forward David Pastrnak.

* Pastrnak leads the League in goals with 16-7—23 in 17 games. Only five different Bruins players have been the first NHL player to reach the 20-goal mark in a season: Buzz Boll (1942-43), Herb Cain (1943-44), Bronco Horvath (1959-60), Phil Esposito (1970-71, 1971-72, 1973-74, 1974-75) and Bill Guerin (2000-01).

^In terms of earliest game on the League schedule

* Only one player in Bruins history has reached the 20-goal mark within the first 20 team games of a season: Esposito hit the mark in the team’s 18th game in 1973-74 (20-19—39).

* Rantanen is tied for the points lead with 6-20—26 in 17 games. The only Avalanche/Nordiques skaters who were the first NHL players to reach the 30-point mark in a season are Peter Forsberg in 1997-98 and Joe Sakic in 1998-99.

* The last time an Avalanche player reached the 30-point mark in the first 20 team games of a season was in 1996-97, when both Sakic and Forsberg did so in their 20th game.
