Morning Line

And I’ll predict that the game will be against the Detroit Red Wings. I mean, the alumni game alone would be an automatic sellout. You want to see Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic suit up against Darren McCarty and Mike Vernon and Kris Draper and all the other hated Wings one last time? Of course you do, and you will buy a ticket to see them one more time, even if some don’t show up. An Avs-Wings alumni game would be just so much fun – and I bet it would be a verycontentious game, which would make it that much more fun.

-Adrian Dater of All Things Avs where the headline reads "Denver a slam dunk to get NHL outdoor Winter Classic game next year".  Dater also refers to the "Outdoor Winter Classic Series" in the story so somewhere along the line there is confusion since I thought Washington was awarded the Winter Classic game for next season.

Facts and coherence and Dater don’t necessarily have anything to do with eachother.

I think it’s wishful thinking for two reasons: 1) The Wings just played in the Classic, so they probably won’t get an outdoor game for another 2+ years, assuming the continue the outdoor series.  2) I’m not sure the NHL wants to draw attention to those years of the Wings/Avs.

It’s bad enough being a fan of sports, which treats us cruelly from time to time.

Dater, on the other hand, seems to have his entire career and public persona built around a rivalry that has been dead for years to which he was only tangentially related when it did exist.  DMac and Lemieux have both moved on more successfully and neither of them is a poster child for stability.

I actually kinda agree with Dater for once… as long as we ONLY have the alumni game (no need for a regular season game) and as long as the alumni are completely the ‘97 rosters from the two teams.  That would be fun.  Also let’s have it on an aircraft carrier.  And I doubt it would be a very contentious game at all.

Hilariously, I’m not sure we’d get guys like Chelios, Shanahan, Fedorov, or Yzerman to suit up for an alumni game against the Avs.

It would honestly crack me the hell up if McCarty and Draper were the two best alumni to suit up against those Avs greats.

Wah vs. the Habs, if they really want a WC in Denver for those 15 fans who can even remember any of the players older than Hedjuk.

Yeah, I agree.

Also, the spectacle and record-setting attendance of this year’s classic will be a hard act to follow, I don’t see the logic behind putting one of this year’s teams into a smaller game next year.

Once again, DET means way, way more to COL than COL would ever possibly mean to DET.

Just because it’s REALLY important to Dater doesn’t mean it’s important to anyone else, and Dater still has not figured that out yet.  DET isn’t actually even that important to the current Avs team and org.

DET’s now played in 2 actual Winter Classics.  One in CHI, and one against TOR.  They did so because those teams have long-lasting meaning to the Wings.  The Avs have no long-lasting meaning or value to the Wings.  The Wings would politely decline, and yeah they’d have an AWFUL time getting an alumni team together for it.

Overheard in the NHL’s planning office:

“When will the NHL embrace a REAL rivalry instead of the fake Wings/Leafs or Wings/Chicago BS. I want to see some serious bad blood - like the Caps vs the Hurricanes! “
