A lot of newcomers aren’t really going to understand how much A2Y has shaped the current state of the Red Wings’ online fan presence and especially the blogosphere, but man oh man it all came from those blogs and comments sections back in the day.

Baroque was also saying this on Twitter, but I want to reiterate. People think that the internet is all a bunch of strangers pretending to be somebody else while isolating themselves from the real world.  That couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve met so many true friends and amazing imaginary people thanks to the online fan community and A2Y was a hub for that for a long time.

I don’t mind going to sporting events alone, but it’s always more fun with a few friends, and Detroit is a long drive for me to just go down for a single game, see it, then drive back home. If sports are more fun when communicating with others - and they definitely are - then why bother doing more than staying at home, watching on TV, and chatting with others online as usual?

Until it was suggested about a dozen of us all go to the same game against Anaheim in February. We all sat in a group, shared the same inside jokes but in person, and then walked to a restaurant in Greektown to have a late dinner because we were hungry and wanted to keep talking about hockey and the Red Wings and life in general. It was a blast, and because of that I’ve never hesitated to go on other meetups for hockey or baseball out of trepidation, just out of lack of time or money, which prevents people from getting together with “real-life” friends just as much as with so-called “weirdos on the internet.”

Then the next day we commented at each other as we drove home through the snow or dealt with airport delays, and instead of just seeing the typed words we could put a face and a voice with them. People we had just talked to on the internet became actual friends who we cared about, as much as anyone else we met through a means other than a hockey blog. Technology is such a powerful connective force to those who dare to use it that way, and that is the very best way to use it.
