Morning Line- Mike Heika On The Kris Russell Trade

In acquiring Russell, Nill paid a high price. The Stars gave up young defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka, high-scoring junior prospect Brett Pollock and a conditional second-round draft pick that could turn into a first if the Stars make the Western Conference finals and Russell dresses for half their playoff games.

Even though the Stars have plenty of young defensemen and a bevy of scoring forwards, the question has to be asked whether acquiring Russell was the best way to spend those assets.

If we gave up Marachenko, and a junior prospect like… I don’t know. Mantha or less + a 2nd for Russel, I’m pretty sure Holland would be assassinated by a loyal wings’ fan.

When I saw this trade, all I could think of was “Say… I seem to recall DAL trading too much youth/futures away to CGY for a vet in a desperate playoff push…  who was the player they regretted?.... Oh right, he became JAROME IGINLA.”

That’s unlikely of course, but…. you just never know.  At any rate, Pollock is now the #2 C prospect in CGY behind Sam Bennett according to HockeysFuture.

Nill is apparently confident enough in his and his scouts’ drafting ability though that they figure they can afford it.  And they might be right.  You already have some really good young players on that team to build around.

Looking at this and the Blues article below it seems as though Kenny isn’t the only GM to over pay in a trade deal or the only one to say “we like our team”. I crab about Kenny so at this time it is sort of proper to acknowledge those facts
