Like father, like son: Frederick Roy loses temper at Spengler Cup

12/27/2013 at 2:57am EST

George here on the late shift, and the Red Wings fan in me can't resist posting this: Patrick Roy's son Frederick plays for the AHL's Rochester Americans, and his playing style is reminiscent of his father's despite his status as a 5'10," 170-pound instigating winger--he's chippy, scrappy and competitive, but he's also got a hair-trigger temper.

The Americans are taking part in the Spengler Cup, and en route to a 5-0 defeat to the Swiss League's HC Geneve-Servette on Thursday, and the QMI Agency found a lovely clip of Frederick losing it at the end of Thursday's game (it's in German)...

And the unnamed author delivered a superb context-setting explanation as to why he went ape:

With his team, the AHL’s Rochester Americans, on their way to a 5-0 loss after being frustrated late in the game, Roy was ejected as time expired after trying to fight Cody Almond of Switzerland’s Geneva-Servette.

Upon exiting the rink, Roy, the son of Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy, yelled at the opposing bench and was visibly agitated while walking to the dressing room. He threw a stick and began kicking a coffee machine. He also insulted the Swiss cameraman who filmed his rampage in the bowels of the arena.

"Roy and his team lost and they were frustrated," Geneva-Servette assistant coach Louis Matte said following the game. "It happens in hockey."

There was no word on whether a suspension was forthcoming as fights are banned in European hockey.

In 22 games this season with the Americans, Roy has amassed three goals and 83 penalty minutes.

Update: Roy apologized on Twitter:

Roughly translated: "I please excuse me for the way I left the ice yesterday. My emotions took over and I learned my lesson ....."
