Leafs About To Sign Petri Kontiola

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking overseas to bolster their depth at centre.

Sportsnet has learned that the team is on the verge of signing free agent Petri Kontiola to a one-year contract. Sources indicate that the deal will be completed as soon as the player gains his official release from Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL.

Kontiola is a former seventh-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks and spent the last five seasons playing in the Russian-based league. The 29-year-old Finn also won a bronze medal while representing his country at the Sochi Olympics and earned a silver at the IIHF World Hockey Championship in May.

I don’t know much (anything) about Kontiola - and this may well be a good signing. But it’s pretty hard to imagine that this was the Leafs’ “Plan ‘A’” going into the draft/free-agency period.

Pfffffft, you think the Leafs have a PLAN?

I imagine the Leafs planning meeting being much like the average leafs comment board.

Basically a bunch of guys with laptops sitting around a table saying things like:

‘Do you think we could land Loui Eriksson for a 3rd rounder?’

‘I hear Crosby is just dying to play in Toronto.’

‘Why don’t we just trade Nazem Kadri for the top pick in the draft?’

‘Frazer McLaren is the next Jarome Iginla. Book it.’

While certainly not awe inspiring or the “finishing touches” on a drive for the Cup, it’s probably a decent move. Put it this way: they didn’t sign a 6’8” truculent forward.
