Kings’ Dustin Brown suspended for 2 games

As Paul noted last night, Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown either accidentally or intentionally elbowed Minnesota Wild forward Jason Pominville in the face, and Brown will sit out the Kings' final pair of games, including tonight's affair against the Red Wings, as a result:

So Brown will sit out both of the Kings' remaining regular season games. The Kings had recalled forward Tyler Toffoli from Manchester prior to the news, telegraphing the decision to some extent.

His elbow earlier in the week came with a warning. That’s probably why this one was so heavy.

He’s a big part of their offense. Hits hard. Front-of-net presence on the PP. This will also mix their lines up quite a bit.

Me likey!

Intentional or not should not matter, same with high sticking or a slashing call.

Exactly.

I’ve been saying for while that contact with the head should be a two minute penalty period.  Go up from there according to severity of the contact.  These shenanigans will end real fast.

That said, couldn’t love the timing more.  LGRW!

I’ve always thought of Brown as a punk, but he should not have been suspended for that elbow. As a Wings fan I’m glad he was though.

Agreed, but Toffoli’s nothing to sneeze at, either.  Kids got great speed and a pretty good shot.  Shouldn’t be anywhere near as wearing on the Wings D though.

The suspension will cost Brown $34,324.32.

Don’t get me wrong .. I’m glad LA loses their captain for an important game against us but ...

Shanny is wrong.

#1 - Brown was doing his job protecting the puck.
#2 - Brown was doing his job protecting himself.
#3 Pominville was stupid enough to put himself into a position where he’d have to eat Brown’s elbow or forearm or shoulder.

Now Brown is out 2 game because Pominville had a brain fart and made a rookie mistake.

Yet another example of why the current rules need to be changed back to the “old rules” and Shanny’s job shouldn’t exist.

Throwing up an elbow is not an acceptable way to protect oneself.  In fact, I think players usually get penalized for it…

As fast as the game is Garth, I would consider Brown’s actions as being a reflex or instinctive.  He wasn’t looking directly at Pominville but he knew he was coming. He threw out his arm as a defencive measure to protect himself form impending contact and possible injury to himself.  Is it Browns fault that Pominville was in the face first position ??  No.

Brown not only protected the puck, he kept himself from being injured.  He also sent Pominville a message ... run me and you’ll feel it.

I guarantee, Pominville will think twice about going after Brown like that a second time.

Brown did his job ... message received.

Definitely a suspendable elbow. Especially for a guy who has been warned already by the league.

However, I really don’t understand what Pominville is doing. You have to expect to get hit when pursuing the puck along the boards and he really couldn’t have put himself in a more vulnerable position.
