So John Moore did this to Erik Haula...
Update: While we're at "Illegal Checks," Chris Kreider was ejected for this hit on Jonas Brodin:

I’m hoping for more than 10 games.
Obvious intent t injure, repeat offender, most of this has been taken out of hockey because of the earlier suspensions; send a message that “the length of suspensions has now increased… substantially!”

In a tweet, Bob McKenzie said he believes it will be a phone hearing for Moore.

How hard is it to just drop a little lower and put a shoulder into his torso? You don’t have to blow his head up with your rising elbow. You can take him out of the play and still make him look foolish. Instead Haula is looking at a nasty concussion and a shorter career. And Moore will get five games - paid.

The rising elbow/shoulder thing has always bothered me. This may sound silly, but when I was a little kid I grew up playing soccer, not hockey, and soccer prohibited any sort of check in which you extended your arm out from your body.
It was incredibly effective in terms of training me to bodycheck with my *body* instead of dinging somebody in the head with a flying elbow, and when I started playing hockey, it made me a more effective hitter (and I never popped out a shoulder while knocking somebody over). I think that the NHL really has to emphasize re-teaching players “how to hit” without that upward-moving motion.

the Chris Kreider play looked like bad luck to me. He really didn’t hit him that hard but it was unexpected and momentum did the damage. The Moore play on the other hand was goonery at it’s finest. Awful hit.
