Kukla's Korner Hockey

Is It Worth It?

from Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun,

It just seems like a lot, and while the tournament should be a fun made-for-TV experience, with no fans in the stands, and should be a nice boost for pandemic-weary hockey fans, you have to wonder if it will all be worth it.

If I were a player, I would certainly wonder if it doesn’t make more sense to focus on the long-term goal of getting all players back to work and a league back to some semblance of normal.

A 24-team NHL tournament in the summer, featuring 75% of the players in the league, as about as far from normal as you can get.

How about not awarding the Stanley Cup at all? I’d say that’s farther from normal than changing the playoff format is. Since the WHA/NHL merger there have been more playoff format changes than there have been years without a Stanley Cup winner.

Oh, and also?  THE WORLD ISN’T NORMAL, why put undue pressure on the league to be normal when nothing else is?

I think that the new format is a welcome change from the long drag of playoffs.  This year the drag will be into November, no golfing this year when you get knocked out.  Quick turnaround and back into a regular season!

I just wish they’d stop pretending that we don’t know the answer to the question “Why?”

This is all about money. The owners don’t want to lose out on money and neither do the players. It’s as simple as that.
