Hockey Talk On A Late Saturday Night In June

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- There isn’t a single defenceman of consequence under the age of 34 available in free agency come July.

- The only thing more foolish than the New York Rangers considering Mark Messier as coach next season is the belief that Wayne Gretzky wants the job also. So there’s Glen Sather having to decide on his coach and his two greatest players both want the job without any kind of real coaching credentials. At least the volatile Patrick Roy did a long apprenticeship in junior hockey before making the NHL step.

- A free agent who made himself some money with a strong playoffs: Damien Brunner of the Red Wings.

a few more hockey notes...

A free agent who made himself some money with a strong playoffs: Damien Brunner of the Red Wings.

With both Tatar and Jarnkrok “waiting in the wings,” Damien would be making a major mistake if he thinks the Wings will “over-pay” for his services. He’s a great guy (with an infectious smile), but he’s not going to get a huge payday based on one 48-game season and a two-round playoff run.

I love the guy, but if he and Filppula think they’re earned a “golden ticket” this year, they’re in for a rude awakening. On the other hand, Tick Tock hasn’t exactly made brilliant decisions lately so, sadly, it just might happen.

I don’t think Brunner is expecting a huge pay check, but he’s definitely getting a raise and Holland would be an idiot if he let Brunner walk.

I think Brunner has made a better case for himself in his half season than Filppula has in his entire career. His attitude and work ethic alone make him a better bet, and his stats were better too. And “huge payday” is a relative term, I doubt Brunner thinks he’s going to get some huge payday. I hope he gets a 3 year deal in the $3MM realm. His stats for his time rival Franzen, who is overpaid at $5MM+, but his cap hit is good. So, Brunner getting closer to $4MM is not unreasonable, but I’d hope it was closer to $3MM.

I was going to guess Brunner skated his way into $3m and Filppula will land in Calgary or some other place where stats mean more than actual game play.

There were even rumblings in Detroit that GM Ken Holland and coach Mike Babcock were not exactly on the same page, although that apparently has been repaired.

There were? I guess all Red Wings fans know Babcock keeps harping about a top six winger and a good defenceman every single off-season and Holland doesn’t seem to address that, but I haven’t read anywhere that they had major friction between them, enough for there to be rumblings about it.

So Gretzky never coached the Coyotes then? Didn’t bother to read the rest of it after that rather large gaffe.
