Greatest Hockey Players- The Top 100 All-Time

from Joe Pelletier of Greatest Hockey Legends,

Although admittedly I'm using a completely unscientific formula, I weigh career achievements (era statistics, awards, championships) and legacy (impact on and off ice, peak dominance) equally high. I rank player ability as the third most important ingredient, as first and foremost as a tie breaker. Hence, I'm not necessarily looking for the better player, as in text book definitions of what a hockey player should be, but for players with the greatest careers and greatest legacies. Therefore the best player is not necessarily the greatest player.

I will list 91-100, you can read on for the rest...

91-100
Scott Niedermayer (D) - Hockey's Winningest Man
Pavel Datsyuk (C) - Dats Incredible!
Aurel Joliat (LW) - The Little Giant
Earl Siebert (D) - Rearguard Roughian
Al MacInnis (D) - Big Shot
Bob Gainey (LW) - Admired By Russians
Sid Abel (C) - Enabling The Production Line
Johnny Bower (G) - The China Wall
Yvan Cournoyer (RW) - The Roadrunner
Billy Smith (G) - Playoff Battler

I’m no hockey historian, but this seems fairly heavily weighted to the days of yore. It’s obviously tough to compare players from different eras but I tend to give more credence to modern athletes in nearly every sport for the basic reason that the competition is elevated so much. With advancements in equipment and training, refined coaching, the players that stand out today stand out among a more talented field in a more advanced game. There are players, like Gretzky or Jordan, who likely would excel no matter the era they played in. There are others who probably would struggle in different times but were the perfect players for their day and age.

I also have trouble with any list of the top 100 players that puts Datsyuk in the bottom 10. I know the criteria for this list isn’t entirely about skill or who the “best player” is, but gimme a break.

How does Igor Larionov not make this list?

I thought the same thing when I saw Fetisov ranked so high. Wtf. Kind of a big omission.
