Staal had to be helped off the ice and put no weight on his right leg after a knee-on-knee hit from Alex Edler in the first period of Canada/Sweden WC game today.

Edler received a major and a game misconduct.

looks like video was taken down due to copyright laws.

Knee on knee’s are probably the worst hit in hockey.  Sometimes you miss the body and get the head, it’s not always intentional, but a knee on knee the VAST majority of the time, someone has to stick their knee out.  That’s only deliberate.  Can’t stand knee on knee’ers.

From what I was able to watch, Edler made a beeline for Staal.  It was indeed a deliberate attempt to injure.

Witnesses said that Edler even protested the game misconduct.

Wow…that last replay shows intent for sure.

Can you fine a country for their idiot player?

Really?  On the TSN feed it looks like Edler lets a collision happen that he could avoid.  Staal is pushing with his right leg to change direction while Edler is in wide stance going straight in.  Edler does not change direction in the second angle shown from behing Edler.  But I have seen other collisions where the perpetrator clearly steers his knee towards a collision.  I don’t think that happens here.  Does that matter, in terms of intent?

IF you’re on Chrome and you have Adblock activated, you’re not gonna see anything on the TSN video link provided by Paul.  I had to go to Explorer to view the clip.

I had no trouble on Chrome.  That may apply only on PC.

I admit it. I winced in pain when I saw the hit. Good grief. I hope Staal makes a swift recovery.

Firefox with AdBlock enabled, however, works. It did for me, anyway.

The WC’s are stupid and pointless.  What a pointless competition to get injured in and lose a star player.

All just to line the IIHF’s pockets.

Guilty as charged. He didn’t stick his knee out, but he surely left it right where is was headed for a reason.

Added video of the Adler/Staal hit, not the greatest but that is what the IIHF is giving us.

If I were Bettman (thank gawd i’m not) I’d suspend Alex Edler from NHL action until after the Olympics.

No reason for these hits to occur in hockey.  Totally avoidable.

Edler gave him the old Marchment treatment.  Don’t know what he’s mad about going into the tunnel there.  What did he think the outcome if that was going to be?  Pretty dirty move, especially for a meaningless tournament.
