Doan Staying In Phoenix

added 5:34pm,

GLENDALE, ARIZONA – Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-signed captain Shane Doan to a four-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are thrilled to sign Shane to a long-term contract,” said Maloney. “Shane is our captain and the heart and soul of our franchise. He is the consummate professional and one of the best leaders in the NHL. His loyalty, commitment, integrity and passion for the game epitomize everything you’d want in a player. It was a priority for us to sign him to a long-term deal so that he can play for the Coyotes for the remainder of his career.”

So, $5.3 million a year for a 35 year old who has only scored 30 goals twice in his career? Why are we heading for a lockout again?

and better yet, by an owner/ownership group that can barely meet the buy price of the team. A winner is the NHL!

Hmm.  That ‘deferral’ twist is pretty interesting, IMO.

A smart club with a willing FA could do something like:

Contract A: 2 years, 25 million bucks, 5 million bucks deferred until after the contract expires.  You sign this contract in a window where you have a lot of cap money and then…

Contract B: 8 years, 50 million dollars.

This way teams can massage the AAV to better fit the ebbs and tides of their cap situation.  The cap for those deals would be 12.5, 12.5, 6.25, 6.25…etc, and depending on how the second contract is structured a player could end up getting 40+ million of that 75 mil combined inside the first 4 years.

Wanna bet there’s going to be some new, more team friendly buyout terms in the next CBA? wink

Hopefully the last page of this story can be written with the ownership group taking over.
