Disturbing The Peace Complaint Against Auston Matthews

added 6:38pm, from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews, believed by many to be the team’s next captain, faces disorderly conduct charges in Scottsdale, Ariz., after an incident last spring with a female security guard at 2 a.m., in which a group allegedly tried to get into her car and Matthews – walking away – dropped his pants.

The Star obtained a copy of the complaint – filed May 28 — from Scottsdale Police on Tuesday.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

It seems like Scottsdale is quite the good time for athletes.

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Su,

In apparently drunken Auston Matthews was caught with his pants down in Arizona and, in doing so, probably cost himself the captaincy of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The announcement was expected to come early next week, just before the NHL regular season is to begin.

But how do they do that now?

How do they do that when Matthews is facing a disorderly conduct and disruptive behaviour charge stemming from an incident last May, according to the Scottsdale Police Department?

How do they do that in this changing world of MeToo and anti-harassment, with a hockey team run by the politically correct general manager Kyle Dubas? How do they look the other way?

It’s a great place to be in your early 20’s.

Bars and pubs in Old Town. Camelback (hiking mountain) nearby. Arizona State University 5 miles right down the same street. Bars are packed. When I was there the temperature in August was 102 degrees at 2 am at the bar (dry heat sucks because when the wind blows it gets warmer) so you can imagine the wardrobe being worn by the girls from ASU. College bars mean cheap drinks too. Not surprised he got into trouble there—happens alot. Heat plus alcohol causes issues.

The down side is that even with the A/C on full blast it still 77 F in your apartment/house and that almost 30 F cooler than outside. And don’t even get me started on electric bills. The water heaters are outside in the backyard so that is a positive, but don’t expect to take a cold shower to cool off—water comes out on the warm side even with it on “cold.” Reclaimed water is also used there. No one has their windows completely up in a car when it is out in the sun. Housing costs $$$$ (I would compare it to living in Birmingham and having Royal Oak’s downtown) with MSU down the street.

I’m not sure I would make light of this situation. Anyone who has a daughter or sister or wife would never want to see them in a position where multiple drunk guys get into a car with her like that. Their intentions may have been harmless but I imagine that woman wasn’t exactly comfortable.

If all Matthews did was drop his drawers, from a distance, it is pretty minor, on his part. A young and stupid move he’ll hopefully learn from.

BTW, I visit Scottsdale quite a bit as my mother and sister live there. I would NEVER want to live there. Too damn hot. I avoid visiting between April and October. I’ll take freezing temperatures over 100+ degree heat any day.

Read into this as you want…

Today Babcock said he was not aware of this until last night.

It happened in late May.

Big whoop.  Not like he was punching cabbies for change.  Not like there was an allegation of sexual assault.

Give him the C and quit whining about this.

Interesting.

Could mean nothing, but that seems a stretch. Your franchise player has that happen four months ago, and as a coach you’re just hearing about it now?

Seems Babs is being kept purposely in the dark. Why? Who knows, but the fact he and Dubas get along like oil and water is more evident than ever.

Probably because his job is to win, not watch TMZ and keep tabs on what the players are doing when they aren’t at the rink.

How about we let the kid take responsibility for his own action instead of trying to pin something on the kid’s coach just because he is….Mike Babcock.

Highest paid coach in NHL should be aware of at least the basics of the mental world of his players because it is a gift basket full of buttons. If he knows which ones to push and which ones should be left alone, he will get the edge.

I agree that understanding your players thought processes is important.

But is he really expected to be preparing his team to play 82+ games a year AND be up to speed on the mental habits of twenty some players on a roster because he’s the highest paid coach in the league?  I mean, one would also assume Matthews had likely had a few drinks when this happened…at that point any mental knowledge you have one someone is worthless.

This is starting to sound like the Toronto media after Game 7 of round 1.  Let’s just keep throwing him under the bus for any and everything, right?

Kyle Dubas just mentioned he found out yesterday too, via Twitter.

Called Matthews right after reading it.

Babcock is paid and pedestaled like a professor queen. He should have also her special capabilities. It is a simple concept.
Matthews, in my impression, was showing obvious signs of being carcinogenic to his team. Given escapade only confirmed my hunch.
But it may look good on Dubas because Matthews incident, since being unknown for quite some time could prevent Marner from gaining more leverage for his contract negotiations since he was very far for from being considered as possible captain.
