BOG Approves Realignment

We all know the division and conference set-up for next season, so here is the wild card plan as described by Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will still consist of 16 teams, eight in each conference, but it will be division-based and a wild-card system has been added as a new wrinkle.

The top three teams in each division will make-up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season points and regardless of division. It will be possible, then, for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three.

The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the lowest number of points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for the divisional championship.

Nope, it’ll never happen.  The players won’t let it happen.

Right?

Garth, I believe the players have already approved this.

Oh I know, I was just remembering all the people commenting on the realignment in the last month or so who said it would never happen because most of the PA were completely against it.

PA signed off for three years per the article. With the Phoenix situation still unsettled, and who knows what else that may develop with a few other franchises, Red Wing fans should enjoy being back in the East for now cause it may not be permanent. Sorry, just a pessimist about this.

Ummm… Somebody didn’t think through this “Divisional Championship” thing very well.

C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 all make the playoffs where C1 has the better record than D1 and C4 and C5 are the wildcards. (According to the NHL press release division names have not been finalized, so I’m using letters A-D like they do; C & D are Eastern Conference.)

First Round looks like this:

    C                     D
C1 v C5           D1 v C4
C2 v C3           D2 v D3

Assume the only upset is C4 beating D1. Your “Divisional Championship” round now looks like this:

    C                     D
C1 v C2           C4 v D2

Assume that C4 pulls another upset, that makes C4 the Divisional Champion of D Division.

There are lots of scenarios like this even when only one wild card comes from each division. They had these stupid divisional playoffs back in the 80’s and everyone hated them because every year one division is always weaker than the others and so one of those undeserving teams gets into the Conference Finals.

There was nothing broken about the old system; Division winners get in and get the top spots, then the rest of the field is filled out regardless of division by record. It ain’t broke, so naturally the NHL is “fixing” it. <face palm>
