Antoine Vermette Signs With The Anaheim Ducks

via the Anaheim Ducks,

The Ducks have signed center Antoine Vermette to a two-year contract through the 2017-18 NHL season. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vermette, 34 (7/20/82), has scored 211-260=471 points with 546 penalty minutes (PIM) in 910 career NHL games with Ottawa, Columbus, Phoenix/Arizona and Chicago. A veteran of 78 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Vermette helped lead the Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup championship in 2015 and the Senators to a Stanley Cup Final appearance against the Ducks in 2007. Since making his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2003-04, Vermette ranks second among all active NHL players in faceoff win percentage at 55.8% (min. 13,000 FO) and fifth in faceoff wins (7595). He has posted a faceoff win percentage of 50.0% or higher in 11 consecutive seasons and ranked in the NHL’s top 10 for faceoff leaders in each of the last four seasons.

Selected by Ottawa in the second round (55th overall) of the 2000 NHL Draft, Vermette scored 17-21=38 points with 93 PIM in 76 games with Arizona last season. Vermette led the Coyotes in faceoff wins (754) and paced team forwards in blocked shots (57). The 6-1, 200-pound center led Arizona in scoring, goals and power-play points (2-3=5) from Mar. 1 through the end of the regular season, collecting 7-7=14 points with a +6 rating and 41 PIM in 19

I am confused as to why the Coyotes would buy him out.  Was his 15-16 season that bad?

Seems like on paper a really good signing/value for the Ducks.

My understading TS, new GM, want to go with the youth. Probably know they are not a contender.

Vermette better suited for a team in the hunt.

So they sign Vrbata, who did have a bad season with Nucks

Young GM hard to read

He bought him out because he couldn’t find a trade partner.

But why he was itching to get rid of him is the confusing part.  Not like AZ is actually a Cup contender in the next couple years.

Isn’t that reason enough to get rid of (relatively) expensive vets and make room for youngsters?

They have plenty of cap room, not like that’s a problem.  Besides, then what’s the point of the Vrbata signing?  He’s no spring chicken.

Arizona is in the last couple of years in Glendale. They have reportedly found a site for a new arena. I was told by someone who works for the team that it is on the site of the Arizona State University golf course that the university has planned for a massive redevelopment. The fact that they’re working on legal papers for the development agreement is consistent with the bureaucracy it would take to get a long-term ground lease/dev agreement done w/ the university.

I honestly couldn’t think of a better location in the entire state of Arizona, so if it is true, that alone will help the team’s chances. So that’s probably 3 years down the road - I think the time between is going to be spent building up some talent so they can parlay the “new arena” hype into something long-term by being an actual winning hockey club. We’ll see. But Vermette doesn’t fit that plan, he’s expendable talent currently because he offers zilch in three years. Expect the team to tank this year with some youth getting experience, a couple high draft picks, some trades, etc. Is actually a very exciting time for the team, IMO. And the guy I talked to said the GM is borderline genius, fwiw. At least they’re moving forward with a plan instead of just drifting.

Super well put, and good insight. I agree that the spot they are looking into putting the new arena is so absolutely perfect. It’s right by ASU, Tempe Marketplace, and a myriad of other entertainment venues that put it way more “in the middle” of things, which I see as a good thing. There are several major freeways right there that fans from any part of the valley could use to get to the arena.

Most importantly, the new arena would be in a spot that doesn’t completely alienate east valley residents, which is where about 95% of the fanbase resides.

And about 80% of the money. Not to mention the students at ASU who will fill in some small amount of seats to see their team when they’re in town - lot of ASU students from both California and NY/NJ/Philly areas.

You’re way too cool, awould.  Agree with the proposed location for the new Yotes’ arena.

As for Vermette, whew.  Dodged a Holland bullet there for once.
