Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News did an online Q & A.
Is there really any merit in the "Seguin might be traded eventually" talk other than that it's just fun (and/or scary) to talk about? Are we discussing it just to help convince ourselves it won't happen?
It's something that happens in a lot of towns. Tampa Bay had the discussion over Steven Stamkos before he signed an 8-year deal that averages $8.5 million. The Islanders are having the same discussion over John Tavares. Heck, the Texas Rangers didn't want to get rid of Yu Darvish, but a big contract forced their hand.
Tyler Seguin has two years left at $5.75 million per. His next contract could be in the $9-10 million per year range. Are the Stars ready to commit to that deal when they already are paying Jamie Benn $9.5 million. It's a real hard question to answer.
The Stars have two years to make a final decision, but they also don't want to lose Seguin for nothing if they can't make the money work.
That's really the only reason for the discussion, but it's a pretty good reason. The Stars probably want to make a decision to sign an extension or make a trade by next summer. That's why I think this is a very important year for Seguin.
