Afternoon Line

... the only problem is that there won’t be a quick fix for whoever happens to come in next. The reality is, Gillis actually inherited a very good situation, was a decent steward for a while, didn’t do enough to make it better and in the past month or so, watched helplessly as it all went up in smoke. Messy – and when it gets messy like this, all you can do is what the Aquilini family did Tuesday. They gave the people what they wanted.

-Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail on the firing of Mike Gillis.  More from Duhatschek...

Gillis is top of the list of GMs who deserve to be fired. The article spells out all the reasons why. Then it says “They gave the people what they wanted.”

This implies it was somehow a PR move that may not have been justified. in this case, what the people want and what is best for the team are the same thing.

The Canucks are in a bad position now and Gillis is probably most to blame.

It will be interesting when everything comes out.  Seems he was forced to hire Tortorella, so I’m curious if he had his hand forced in dealing either Schneider or Luongo…

Garth - it probably won’t come out. At least not more than speculation. I can’t imagine a guy coming out and spilling the beans on the ownership. He might do it in his next job interview, sure. But I would be surprised if he didn’t have some kind of legal agreement not to discuss certain details. Anyways, no fired GM ever spills those kind of beans, at least that I can remember. After all, Gillis wants another job. A lot of owners would not think of hiring a guy who airs dirty laundry.

The information might come out, but it won’t be the whole story and it won’t be more than innuendo, since it won’t be coming from the horse’s mouth.

It does seem the ownership takes a pretty active role in things, which isn’t ideal for any GM and seems to never work out real well. And I agree that not everything will come out, but enough should to get a decent idea of how that train got wrecked.

Oh, I don’t expect that it’s going to be Gillis saying anything, but word will come out somehow if there’s anything to be said, and I’m fine with innuendo, innuendo is great.
