I enjoyed the article.  Two reactions though.

Why are the Rangers and Blues considered contenders? 

Why so many assertions that Minny is the US hockey Mecca?  I’ll grant its probably true for junior hockey, and maybe collegiate hockey (although I think Michigan takes a strong run at that claim), but on a pro level?  I just don’t see Wild fans having the kind of presence I’m always told they have.

This is an article written periodically about the Wings, usually 3-4 years away from their last Finals appearance.  It was written in 2000, written again in 2006, and now here again in 2013.

Why so many assertions that Minny is the US hockey Mecca?

I think it’s a reference to the highest percentage of population per state that plays hockey.
