Fixing The Power Play

06/04/2021 at 5:34pm EDT

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Blashill used the word “tactician," a coach with “different offensive ideas” to describe what characteristics he and Yzerman are looking for in the assistant coach.

“Especially a guy with an offensive kind of mindset, somebody that brings some different, potentially unique, ideas,” Blashill said. “It’s hard to come up with things that are real different or unique in the game, and that’s not necessarily how you win.

“But ultimately is there some fresh ideas or unique ideas or different thought processes?”...

“We need to add to our personnel to get the right fit so our power play has a chance to be more successful,” Yzerman said. "We have to do something different with our power play, for sure. Our power play is 31st, collectively. It struggled the last few years.

"We need to add to our personnel to get the right fit, so our power play has a chance to be more successful and we need to do things a little bit differently than we have done. The spots players are put in and the way we bring the puck up the ice, it needs to be addressed.

Your King Clancy Memorial Trophy Finalists

06/04/2021 at 11:06am EDT

NEW YORK (June 4, 2021) – San Jose Sharks right wing Kurtis Gabriel, Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne and New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. The Tampa Bay Lightning Will Turn The Page On An OT Loss

06/04/2021 at 9:50am EDT

from Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times,

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal’s overtime goal Thursday night not only silenced the largest crowd to watch a game at Amalie Arena in more than 15 months, it also pumped life into his team.

The Lightning may have played their best game of the second-round playoff series against the Hurricanes — they controlled the puck, manufactured scoring chances and revived their power play — but Game 3 ended with a 3-2 loss in front of an announced crowd of 13,544.

The Lightning could have put the Hurricanes’ season on the ropes with a win. Instead, Carolina got its first victory of the series, cutting its deficit to 2-1.

“I think our team has gotten better every single game, and that’s what I’ve liked,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “We’ve just got to keep going. You can hang your head on these (kinds of losses). You’ve just got to turn the page and go to the next one.

“The playoffs are a big damn roller coaster, and you can’t get too excited when you’re high, can’t get too low when it’s low, and you’ve just got to keep trusting in your process.”

Brad Marchand's OT Goal Gives The Boston Bruins A 2-1 Series Lead

06/04/2021 at 9:46am EDT

from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,

They revere tradition here, from the four Stanley Cup banners — now about four decades old — to the newer hallmarks of Islanders Hockey, namely: hang in there, get some gigantic saves, grind out a tight win.

Brad Marchand stomped on the script.

As Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov was trying to steal Game 3 in a duel with Tuukka Rask on Thursday night, Marchand sent a shot from outside the left circle, some 6 feet before the goal line. It floated over Varlamov’s glove, top corner, far side, at 3:36 of overtime.

A sniper’s touch. The final: Bruins 2, Islanders 1, a 2-1 series lead for the Black and Gold, and a chance to take a commanding lead in Game 4 on Saturday night.

“Any puck,” said Marchand, who scored his third career playoff OT winner, “has a chance to go in.”

Detroit's Defense On Display At The World Championship

06/04/2021 at 9:28am EDT

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

At least one Detroit Red Wing will return from the World Championship with a medal.

Defensemen Troy Stecher and Moritz Seider helped their teams to quarterfinal victories Thursday in Latvia and a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

Canada, with Stecher, defeated Russia 2-1 in overtime and will face the United States on Saturday (7:15 a.m. ET, NHL Network). Germany, with Seider, edged Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout to advance against Finland on Saturday (11:15 a.m. ET, NHL Network).

Andrew Mangiapane (Calgary) scored the winning goal for Canada. Stecher made it possible by taking a drop pass just inside the blue line, making two nifty moves to elude defenders and sending a backhand pass across the front of the net for a one-timer.

Stecher led his team in ice time (25:51).

Seider logged 23:07, second on his team, in ice time. Leon Gawanke scored the tying goal with 44 seconds remaining in the third period.

“I think we were the better team from the beginning,” Seider said in a story posted on iihf.com. “There was no doubt that we were going to win that game. We can be very proud of ourselves.

Zach Parise said he plans on attending training camp for the Minnesota Wild next season even though his role with the team remains unclear.

Parise said he will speak with Wild general manager Bill Guerin and coach Dean Evason during the offseason. The 36-year-old forward has four seasons left on a 13-year, $98 million contract ($7.54 million average annual value) he signed with Minnesota on July 4, 2012.
