WINNIPEG, October 9, 2023 - The Winnipeg Jet Hockey Club announced today they have agreed to terms with both forward Mark Scheifele and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on identical seven-year contract extensions with an average annual value of $8,500,000. Both of their seven-year contract extensions will begin in the 2024-25 season.

Scheifele, 30, was the first player drafted by the Jets after their return to Winnipeg when he was picked in the first round (seventh overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft. The Kitchener, Ont. native is entering his 11th full season with the Jets and he is coming off a single-season career-high 42 goals in 2022-23.

Scheifele ranks first in franchise history in playoff goals (19) and regular season game winners (44). He is also chasing the franchise lead in regular season goals (2nd 272), assists (2nd 373), points (2nd 645), and games played (3rd 723). Scheifele made the 2019 and 2020 NHL All-Star Games and has eclipsed 20 goals and 60 points for the past eight seasons.

He also ranks fourth in points from the 2011 NHL Draft class and his 271 goals since 2013-14 rank eighth among NHL centres.

Internationally, Scheifele has represented Canada multiple times, including a trio of World Hockey Championships. He won a gold medal for Canada at the 2016 IIHF WHC and won silver at the 2017 edition.

Throughout his time in Winnipeg, Mark has put an emphasis on giving back and using his platform to help others. Hes been actively involved in on- and off-ice work and fundraising efforts for organizations like KidSport. Mark also found a unique way to give back to the frontline workers with his Scheifs Healthcare Heroes initiative at Jets home games.

Hellebuyck, 30, was drafted by the Jets in the fifth round (130th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft. The Commerce, Mich. native is entering his ninth full season with the Jets. Hellebuyck finished as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season, an award he won in 2020 and was also a finalist in 2018. He finished last season top-five among NHL goaltender in wins (T-3rd: 37), save percentage (T-4th: .920) and shutouts (T-5th: 4).

Hellebuyck has rewritten the franchise record book for goalies during his time with the Jets. He leads franchise goalies in career games played (445), wins (238), shutouts (32), and saves (12,465). Hellebuyck also leads the franchise in single-season wins (2017-18: 44), shutouts (2017-18 and 2019-20: 6), and saves (2021-22: 1,962). Since 2017-18, Hellebuyck leads all NHL goaltenders in games played (363) and saves (10,412), ranks second in wins (199) and third in shutouts (26).

Hellebuyck has also been recognized for his performance by being named to three NHL All-Star Games (2018, 2020, 2023), he was an NHL First All-Star in 2020 and an NHL Second All-Star in 2018.

Internationally, Hellebuyck has represented the United States at two World Hockey Championships, highlighted with a bronze medal in 2015.

In the community, Connor is active with Project 11 in Winnipeg and particularly their mental health awareness initiatives. Connor worked with author Thom van Dycke to write a childrens flipbook called Bucky Beats the Blues / Is Something Wrong with Weasel. The book raises awareness about mental health and its sales raise money to help support the cause.

I don't get it. Please someone explain why you sign a contract to stay in Winnipeg that you could have gotten the same--if not then similar-- elsewhere?

I mean I can sorta get to a point that it may make sense on years 6 & 7 for a goalie that is approaching 31 yrs old as they've probably got 5 good years left. But a 30 year old centre? No way. Especially in a city where everyone wants out as soon as they hit UFA. And a city that is listed 1st on any NTC--don't get it. I mean this isn't Florida where it's 60 F and no income tax--it's Winnipeg.

Stump23dca

Have you ever been to the Peg dca? If not maybe you should visit for a bit. I don't see player's NTC, but with the signings here you're wrong about everyone wanting to leave. Where do you live dca?

dcaStump23

It's right up there on my "to do vacation list" exactly 1 spot above Siberia.

Wings play there in late Dec. Lets see chart says high of about 20 F and low of 5 F....guess there is always next year's NHL schedule. Only reason I'd ever visit a place like that.

Guess its too bad I missed the massive contract celebration at Montana's...I am sure the city was bumping until 10pm. But, I think I could have more fun at a Compuware 2010's hockey game celebrating with the mom's--if you don't know ask around or check the social feeds.

As as players wanting to leave: Patrik Laine, Evander Kane, Jacob Trouba, Dustin Byfuglien, Jack Roslovic (and his replacement Pierre-Luc Dubois). Byfuglien even ended his career rather than play more in "the peg." But yeah sure tell me more about making stuff up. Cause Winnipeg has Florida weather and taxes, eh?

Stump23dca

Too funny, what does playing hockey in winter have anything to do about...well anything. Laine wanted out because of locker room issues, not the city. Kane wanted out because of not fitting in really, he felt home in Atlanta because of a large black population. Locker room issues too. Trouba, for the most part his wife wanted out. Big Buff had lost his passion to play. Roslovic was unhappy on how he was being used, and terms of a deal. Dubois, well he just doesn't seem happy anywhere. For sure taxes anywhere in Canada is an issue, weather is kinda normal for us Canucks huh

TreKronorStump23

A few months ago DCA was pounding the Winnipeg weather drum - I responded to him with very comparable weather stats in other northern NHL cities that debunked his theory.  Unsurprisingly, I didn't hear a peep back from him.  I wouldn't bother trying to win him over - he likes to be on the high horse.

The issue in WPG is without a doubt not about the weather...there's a serious culture issue in that club.

dcaTreKronor

debunked?

When the 'peg' becomes hockey's UFA destination and more than 2 UFA to be start signing long-term deals then you can play the see..see...I told you so game. I am glad I proved you so wrong that it shook you to your core and you can remember what I said months ago; whereas, I forgot you existed a second after I hit send on the reply--just like I will on this one.

but until then try again...look back and read the comments again as others pointed out: UFA consider a wide variety of reasons. But having two big minuses in the columns for weather and taxes can certainly sway decisions. That's the point you don't seem to be getting.

Winnipeg isn't like other Northern markets...It's winters are particularly brutal. There are 2 markets in the US (Minneapolis and Buffalo) and 2 in Canada (Edmonton and Calgary) that can compare--but they are not the same. In terms of amenities (and everything that goes with increased population) all of those cities make the 'peg seem like a hick prairie town.

That is why I was so shocked two UFA to be re-signed there. Hellebuyck was said to have demanded a trade. But looking at his age and contract you can see how the Jets overpaid in term at least which might have changed his reasoning. But Scheifele, that's still a mystery to me.

Anyone can point to one example and say see, see, I am right I just debunked your theory. Just because 1 example of a player that isn't swayed by other factors doesn't mean there isn't a larger pattern. You show the larger pattern (others expand on it and clarify) and then someone insists they are still correct by pointing at a couple of outliers--you don't argue: you ignore them.Don't argue with an idiot or a town fool is the lesson. That lesson only

seems to be unsurprising when you think you aren't it.

When you live in someone's brain for weeks and months it must have shattered their fragile existence. So do everyone a favor and just hit ignore.

Moving on----------------to a real comment.

But, but, but, but, but (you'd think after the first few excuses they would give it up and concede, "Yes, players not wanting to play there is a definite issue. And seems to be a growing concern with American players not wanting to play in Canada beyond their RFA period." It's actually been a consideration when drafting with the organization.)

....so while agreeing that taxes does play into this esp after adding escrow: it seems to get downplayed. Just like taking great weather and adding no state income taxes means a huge advantage...but then you get the town fool that says Player X didn't sign with them (ignoring the whole there is a salary cap and that team can't sign everyone) so you ignore them and move on.

okay moving on for real now:

It's not "winter is winter" you learn to deal with it. It's the, "Why do you have to do it there when here, here, and here are better options for the family so that isn't even an issue." And that is one of the reasons why Canada hasn't seen a team win a Cup since '93. That's almost Gretzky leaves for LA days of olde and his dad tries to take the heat off his wife making the family decision by providing a BS excuse territory. I wasn't even a teenager then so I really don't care the exact date.

But more-focused: The 'peg excuses seem to be divided into 2 arguments:

city issues (wife not happy living there, players thinks city's diversity is an issue)

and

team issues (this star left because it was the locker room (I would actually

call it an issue with a coach that favored vets, Wheeler and Mark Scheifele to be exact, despite a young player scoring 44 goals--and that approach cost the team dearly during Hellebuyck's prime years--and still will with couple million in dead cap going forward--but that's for a different comment), but okay I will concede the point that I've always allowed for: there are reasons besides weather and taxes to leave an organization...but that doesn't mean those two aren't factors.

And, I will go out on a limb and say if those same players were in a similar team issue situation in Tampa those team issues would become less significant factors. Setting aside the whole they were Cup contenders for a while and that attracts stars to any market: keeping more money is obvious to anyone. It's a HUGE advantage. Again Canada, last Cup champ was in '93. So plenty of data backing up this theory. Getting out of practice in 60-70 F weather and being able to do things is also significant. Happy wife happy life. Hometown and family in area is significant too as Detroit is luring players.

So again I ask why would a UFA sign long term in Winnipeg? Is anyone predicting them to be anything more than they've been the past few seasons?

It's a situation that I fear Detroit is headed into. I just call it by a different name: the Detroit Pistons (late '00 through late '10's) issue. Bubble team that

won't go anywhere when they make the playoffs. Happy to fill seats and suites. Sign a player here and there past their prime to keep fans happy, but won't move the contention needle.

I will concede that living among polar bears in winter might attract a couple of UFA more than I originally thought.
