What To Do With William Nylander?

08/02/2023 at 2:52pm EDT
The Maple Leafs have a dilemma on their hands with William Nylander. As the star forward enters the final year of his contract, should the team lock him in long-term or let him play out the year and take their chances? TSN Hockey's Frankie Corrado and Craig Button share their thoughts.

Watch the 5 minute video at TSN.

So, the rumors are that 5 players (including two significant NHL'ers) are going to be suspended for misconduct around the 2018 Canadian National Junior Team soon for a group sexual assault that took place at a Hockey Canada gala event in June 2018 in London, Ont.

Might not be Leafs related--but it's in their backyard.

Also, the Winter Classic is going to be the Kraken vs the Golden Knights in Seattle at the MLB stadium.

There are a lot of guys who at least played in the NHL on that roster. None is more significant than Makar. Good lord, this is rough.

It was my understanding that Makar was not around for that event.  Did that get proven false?

I can tell you Mike Babcock attended that event.

8 players were accused by the victim.

Only 2 players confirmed they didn't attend the gala and were not in London at that time: Victor Mete & Jordan Kyrou.

Other players put out personal statements (or via their agents) saying they weren't involved: Jake Bean, Kale Clague, Max Comtois, Dillon Dube, Dante Fabbro, Cal Foote, Jonah Gadjovich, Carter Hart, Brett Howden, Cale Makar, Colton Point, Taylor Raddysh, Sam Steel, Tyler Steenbergen, Robert Thomas, and Conor Timmins.

Players putting out statement that they have fully cooperated with the investigation but declining further comment: Boris Katchouk, Drake Batherson and Michael McLeod.

Alex Formenton is the lone player that has not made any comments to date.

So if the victim is telling the truth (which I have no reason to doubt): the math doesn't add up.

However: Cale Makar, Dante Fabbro and Colton Point were NCAA players so according to lawsuit they were not involved as it was stated that the gala only included CHL affiliated players. I can't tell you if they were with teammates, but didn't attend the gala.

CHL players were: Sam Steel (Dal), Drake Batherson (Ottawa), Brett Howden (Vegas), Maxime Comtois (UFA), Boris Katchouk (Chicago), Robert Thomas (St. Louis), Dillon Dube (Calgary), Taylor Raddysh (Chicago), Connor Timmins (Toronto), Alex Formenton (Swiss League), Michael McLeod (New Jersey), Jake Bean (Columbus), Cal Foote (UFA), Tyler Steenbergen (Finnish Elite), Carter Hart (Philadelphia)

Wingding

There was an extended period when all but 8 players had denied being in town at the time of the event, which seemed fairly easy to verify. I am suspicious of the 7 who issued statements later.
