Video- "The Competitive Balance Is Extraordinary"

06/08/2023 at 11:37am EDT

That's Gary Bettman speaking with the folks at the NHL Network.

Im not going to listen to him cuz Ive just heard him enough, so my comments may be ill informed.  Wouldnt be the first time.

Theres a competitive balance obviously because franchises cant hold on to all players theyve developed or acquired because of the salary cap as they mature and reach their most productive years.  The hard cap pits worker vs worker for salary, an extra million to this guy takes money out of the pool available to give to someone else.  If hes a star or star in the making hes going to move as soon as he gets the chance because the window to make money for a professional hockey player is very small.

According to spotrac, 20/32 teams had 0 cap space for the end of the 2023 season, 28/32 teams were over 95% spent.  Successful teams just cannot retain players they want to for as long as theyd want to.

Successful teams are prevented from remaining so because of the hard cap, a couple may get lucky in picking up some pieces that plug in to keep them going.

The Bettman intent is roster churn and the prevention of excellent teams and dynasties.

You do realize that Buttman came from the NBA where he was the one that pushed for a salary cap system. It's how the NBA went from regional audiences with teams to one that prioritizes superstars and has a global audience.

That's what he trying to do with the NHL (a big assist went to the advent of HDTV as hockey was always the sport that was better to watch in person than on TV until the large panel HDTV's and broadcasts came out). It's kinda the whole point of a hard cap salary cap. Why do you think there is so much push on European games and marketable events like outdoor games? That is where the next assist came out (the NHL early adoption of digital tech and active social media think BAMTech).
As far as the owner financials--why do you think they were willing to lose a whole year's worth of revenue to implement this system in a CBA--because they are stupid businessmen? The player's cut of HRR went from 57% to 50%

That's not the real problem with the weasel Gary Buttman. No, the problem is the riding with Arizona despite playing in a 5000 seat college arena. The lying about playing in the Olympics. The problem is pushing the game to abandon traditions and prioritize money (like through the hated digital advertising boards). He doesn't care if it is distracting to the TV viewer---franchise values are through the roof (500M for Vegas, 650M for Seattle).

His next radar item is the Bally's Regional Networks (Diamond Sports Group) bankruptcy and payments to teams and the league's HRR. Don't expect him to focus on any of this other stuff you want.

I did watch the first few minutes and it was not the same old Bettman.

As for the rest of the interview, I don't know.

The problem with Bettman in these situations, we all assume the same spin from him but it is his fault.

Heck I am still waiting for Bettman to announce a league wide tribute to Gordie Howe as he mentioned at the time of his passing.  I think I will be waiting forever.

L'il Gary is hard at work, trying to figure out a way to make a Gordie Howe tribute benefit the Penguins and Blackhawks somehow.
