National Hockey League executives Colin Campbell, Stephen Walkom, Rod Pasma and Dr. Willem Meeuwisse detail some of the topics that were discussed at the NHL general manager meetings, including potential changes to player safety, overtime rules, and more.
from Ryan Dixon of Sportsnet,
Could the NHL one day implement some NBA-style rules for three-on-three overtime?
The NHL general managers met Tuesday morning in downtown Toronto to discuss a variety of issues around the game. One thing that consumed a significant amount of oxygen was the conversation around whether overtime has become a bit stale.
In the past, theres been some discussion around extending overtime beyond the five-minute period we have now, possibly in conjunction with eliminating the shootout. Colin Campbell, senior vice-president, hockey operations for the NHL said those potential changes are not top of mind right now as much as examining ways to curb certain trends under the current format. Certainly the three-on-three set up has thrilling moments, but theres a sense it has become too much of a possession game, with teams more than happy to drift back into their own zone with the puck to make a line change or simply regroup for a better look on the attack.
continue, includes other topics too...
they need to figure out some kind of over and back rule, like if you enter the zone you at least have to attempt a shot. watching teams hold onto the puck and regroup for half of overtime is absolutely awful. i can't believe it's taken them this long to even bring it up. the consequences for it could be anything from:
- if you purposely regroup, you have to dump the puck to the other team and get back onside;
- minor penalty
- treat it like icing and have a draw in the regrouping team's zone
of course, this will only add more room for errors and interpretation. is a purposeful whiff on a shot an attempt? do you allow them to regroup to center or do they have to stay in the O-zone? not for me to say.
