Definitely an unnecessary hit, but really not all that horrible per se.  Just a really unfortunate outcome.  It almost seems like the whiplash from it being unexpected is what got him the worst.  Regardless, it wasn't needed.

Unrelated to the hit, that was a great release on that shot.  It actually looked like Makar may have managed to just barely get his stick on the puck to deflect it.

NEW YORK (April 25, 2023) Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has been suspended for one game for interference against Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann during Game 4 of the teams First Round series in Seattle on Monday, April 24, the National Hockey Leagues Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 8:23 of the first period. Makar was assessed a minor penalty for interference.
