Ticket Tuesday: NHL Winter Classic Clear Leader On Secondary Market

12/29/2015 at 8:43pm EST

By Joe Sudberg,

Only one NHL game this week owns a ticket average above the $400 mark on the secondary market, and it’s for good reason. The Boston Bruins will play host to the Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium on New Year’s Day in the latest edition of the NHL’s increasingly popular Winter Classic game.

According to TiqIQ.com, Winter Classic tickets have an average price of $469.04 with a get-in price of $220. Over the last two months, the average ticket price to the Winter Classic has showed little movement overall, showcasing that high ticket demand has remained constant. On November 1st the average ticket price was $462.50. One month later that price reached $480.96 and has only dipped slightly in the weeks leading up to puck drop.

This year’s game will be the eighth installment of the outdoor game and the second time the Bruins serve as host. The Bruins lost 2-1 in overtime back in 2010 against the Philadelphia Flyers when they played at Fenway Park. Friday’s game will be the Canadiens’ first appearance in the annual affair.

Those traveling for one of the NHL’s most sought-after events can find cheap flights to Boston on Hipmunk.com, in addition to looking through hotels near Gillette Stadium on Hipmunk to complete the travel logistics in one stop.

Of course, the Winter Classic isn’t the only game this week generating big demand on the secondary market. Two other NHL games this week currently own an average ticket prices over $300, as listed below:

12/29/2015 | Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders | Air Canada Centre | Average Price: $387.33 | Get-in Price: $177

1/2/2016 | Toronto Maple Leafs vs. St. Louis Blues | Air Canada Centre | Average Price: $309.12 | Get-in Price: $113

Say what you will about the Toronto Maple Leafs play on the ice, but their fan base continues to be one of the most dedicated in the sport. Despite owning last place in the Atlantic Division (13-14-7, 33 points) the Leafs have the second and third most expensive NHL tickets on the secondary market this week when they face the New York Islanders on Tuesday and St. Louis Blues Saturday.

The Islanders game comes in higher with an average ticket price of $387.33 with a get-in price of $177, while the Blues game has an average ticket price of $309.12 and $113 get-in price. Both dates have had a positive trend this week, with the average ticket price rising 17% for the Islanders game compared to a 15% rise for the Blues game.
